CHAPTER VII

L I K E A B E A U T I F U L M I R A G E

The day of the cultural festival has come. Since I'm not part of the cast, I was tasked to send out fliers to people walking around the school about our play. All though it's an easy job to do but it's tiring. I saw Charlotte in the booth circled by people. She was on her costume and she really looks good on it that it made me stare at her for an entire minute.

There was someone who approached her later, a classmate of mine way back in middle school. Her name is Jessy. Back then, she somehow hated me and I don't know the reason of it. Maybe it's because of my clumsiness? Oh right, I remembered. I screwed up one time in our class activity and she's hated me ever since. Another pair of my former classmates have already arrived. It was Rachel and Denise. I slowly walked away to avoid such reunion but Rachel seemed to remember me and called me. I sprinted away when I heard my name.

After I ran, I met Freddy. I questioned him about the favor I asked him after our talk. It was about the notice I got in my phone before the notice written on paper. I asked him to double check which notice is true. He explained that they key the notices on paper and then they send the data to the people in charge of delivering phone notices. "I've got your answer." He said. "It's true that Rebecca Martin is your assigned wife. I checked the calculations myself. There was no mistake. But... There is evidence that someone tampered with the notification service you had already signed up for on your phone."

"Does that mean someone purposely sent me a false notice?" I asked.

"That's possible, but it might also be a system error. There's no actual evidence."

"I see."

"But... What would you do if the notice was wrong?"

I became speechless from his question.

"I was just curious so don't worry about it."

Freddy then left. At the same time, Rebecca arrived at Brian's school together with her new friend, Michelle.

When I was handing out fliers, I suddenly met Rebecca together with her new friend. We were both dumbstruck. Hold on a minute, is this what Rebecca looks like? What's up with her new outfit? She really looks cute! But when she took the flier, she immediately ran upstairs. I can't believe she wouldn't even talk to me. Why am I like this? I feel nervous.

It's already 11:00 A.M. and the show is about to start in 30 minutes! I rushed out to check on my classmates. I met Edward on my way but he looked like he's in a hurry. "Edward, why are you such in a hurry?" I asked.

"There's only 30 minutes left before the show." He replied. "I must get changed."

"Are you off the costume fitting?"

"Yes. I haven't seen you in your costume yet. Can I come with you?"

"No."

He then continued walking away from Brian.

"Actually, if you see me in my costume, I'll have to kill you."

I chuckled and said, "You will never change will you, Edward?"

"Is everything okay? You're acting kind of weird. Did something happen?"

"Rebecca came here to the festival. But we haven't spoken since before summer vacation... Actually, it was my fault that I made her angry. I bumped into her just now, but we just couldn't be like before. I wonder if she's still angry with me."

"Do you think she would come here if she was still mad at you? I don't think she's mad anymore."

"Really?"
