"I thought mission trips were supposed to help children and families in need?" Lila spoke from where she looked out the window.
"We are helping a family in need." Grace, Lilas mother, said from the passengers seat.
"We're helping rich people get their generator running." Lila shot back as she made eye contact with the woman through the mirror.
"Still someone in need." Lacey, Lilas other mom, said as she took a turn into a nice neighborhood.
"Live a little, Lila." Grace teased with a knowing look as they pulled into a rather large home, the beautiful landscape out front greeting them. Lila let her eyes wonder to the purple flowers that were along two bushes crowded around the door. The were Lilacs, she knew what those looked like by heart by now.
She listened to the soft bicker of her moms as they began to get the tools out of the back of the small car. That's how they met actually, becoming partners and started their own small business together. Then they fell in love, met with a sperm doner, and nine months later Lila was born. For the two to be married for eighteen years now and only bicker on the down low was oddly comforting to Lila, she knew a lot of couples didn't make it that long, she didn't even expect to make it that long when she got married.
Making her way toward the small bush she ran her hand over the soft petals, the purple popping against her warm ivory skin. She smiled for the first time since she'd gotten there, knowing these had to be a good sign. The sound of the door opening made her eyes snap up. A boy that stood taller then her walked out, his shiny blue eyes giving her a odd look, rather judging.
"What the hell are you doing?" he asked, attempting to intimidate her obvious, something Lila never seemed to be. With a shrug she used her hand to block the sun in her eyes, squinting her dark eye.
"Just looking at your Lilas." she said back to him with a shrug of her shoulders.
"The purple flowers?" he asked, clearly not knowing the name of them.
"Lila is purple flowers. Well, lilac, but a lot of people say lila instead." the blonde said back with a look, a way of intimidating him back as he did her. It seemed to work slightly, his posture falling as his scold did to. A older man immediacy walked out from behind him, taking a look at Lila before his eyes flickered toward the two woman walking over with tool bags in hand.
"Oh! You must be Grace and Lacey, please to meet you." the man said as he moved past Lila to shake both their hands.
"Back at you, you've got a beautiful home." Grace said, shaking his hand with more force then needed.
"Thank you, and thank you for your help." he said, his voice so fake Lila gagged, getting her another weird look from the boy who hadn't moved from a few feet away from her.
