A/N: May possibly be slightly triggering- mentions of self harm and abuse but they aren't graphic
BLURB: Where Michael is in love with his best friend who is also the most popular player in the school. Did I mention that Luke's straight too?
Everyone in the school knew who they were. Luke, Michael, Calum and Ashton. They had all the girls practically at their feet, begging to sleep with them, and in Luke's case, their hoeing around usually worked, much to the dismay of Michael. But no-one had to know that the green-haired boy felt this way about his best friend because 1, Luke was straight and 2, everyone thought Michael was too.
No-one knew anything about Michael. He would act tough and fuckboy-like around the school premise and in every single party that he just had to show up to, but no-one knew about the bruises his father would leave on his body, no-one knew about the scars littered around his arms, marking all the days he wished he hadn't lived. No-one knew how many times Michael nearly tightened the noose around his throat, nearly stepped off the roof or took one pill too many.
What hurt the green-eyed boy the most was that even his so-called best friends didn't know anything about him either. Sure, they'd seen him upset before, but he knew many things about them that they kept secret from the rest of the school too, just like that one time where Calum said he would totally spend a night with Liam Hemsworth. Luke's reaction wasn't pleasant to say the least. That was another day marked by blades on Michael's wrist.
Tonight, Josh was hosting a major party for the whole school and naturally, all four boys were invited because what party would it be without the party boys?
"How much girls do you think I can lay in total tonight?" Luke's voice jeered through Michael's phone as he rummaged through his closet to find an acceptable party outfit, making him roll his eyes.
"Dunno, depends on how wasted you get." Michael mumbled back, putting on a sneer at the end to cover up his deadpanned drone.
"Reckon I could do it sober too, what about it?"
"What about what?" Michael found a black, hooded sweater, so tossed it on his bed with a slight shrug, it would suffice.
"What I'm saying is we shouldn't get wasted tonight. We can drink, but just enough to remember what happened in the morning." Luke replied, sounding too cocky for his sensible suggestion.
"That's very, um, mature of you, Lu." Michael was trying to coax the blonde out of his idea because alcohol made Michael forget. He could actually pretend his life wasn't such a hellhole if he got absoloutely shit-faced all night long. If they followed through with was Luke was saying, that wouldn't be possible for the boy.
"No, dickhead, I'm saying that I want to see how many girls I'll lay without being completely wasted." Luke's voice said matter-of-factly, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Why did you say 'we', then. I'm getting wasted if I fucking want." Michael argued back trying to ignore the pit in his stomach from Luke's last comment and focus on the positive instead.
"No, you're not. I'm getting Cal and Ash in on it too. Whoever loses can't get drunk for whole month."
"You're fucking crazy." The green-eyed boy scoffed, finally finishing up picking his outfit, he put the phone on speaker mode and began to change, seeing as it would take him less than five minutes to do so.
While Luke was on the other end of the line, talking about how big Eric's house is and how they should definitely have a party there one day, Michael tuned out, pulling on his skinny jeans while thinking of how Luke's lips would feel on his own, how his skin would feel. Michael thought of Luke's sapphire blue eyes, the way his pupils would dilate when he was excited, how his head would tilt to the side a little when he was curious.
"Michael? Oi arsehead?" Luke's voice called snapping Michael back to reality.
"Hmm? Oh right, sorry." Michael hummed, cursing at himself mentally.
"You okay?" Luke asked, making the smaller boy's heart clench in longing. He wasn't okay ad he wished Luke would understand, but he wouldn't and he couldn't.
"yeah, 'm fine."
Michael heard a car pulling up to the driveway as he picked the phone up again, listening to his best friend's rambling, and his eyes went hide, face reddened with panic.
"L-Luke, I'll see you at the party, yeah, I have to go." Michael said quickly into the phone, his anxiety levels boiling up.
"Kay, I'll pick you up in ten, later loser." Luke called back, completely oblivious to Michael's fear as he heard the front door slam open. The boy hurriedly hung his phone up, throwing it to the corner of his room and quickly cowering under his bed where he hoped his dad wouldn't find him.
But his dad did find him, and he was drunk. Michael's dad was an aggressive drunk, and he took it all out on his only son.
By the time his dad had let go of him, Michael was a screaming mess, shaking in a heap on the ground, right beside the front door, where his dad had dragged him down to. He could feel the scabs forming around the area on his back where his dad had smashed an empty alcohol bottle on and the small trails off blood trickling down from each one. Michael was thankful that he was dressed in all black.
When he heard the doorbell ring, Michael automatically began to panic because that had to be Luke, yet he was still curled up on the floor, unable to get up.
"GET THE DOOR YOU FUCKING FAG!" Michael's dad yelled, causing his whole body to flinch violently. His dad was the first person Michael ever came out to, and after what happened with him, he never wanted to come out to anyone else ever again.
The doorbell rang 10 times in a row, Luke's way of being funny, but Michael's way to get hurt some more.
"I SAID," the man yelled, and Michael could hear his footsteps advancing closer to him, until his collar was being lifted up and he was shoved against the door violently, making him grunt out in pain, "GET THE FUCKING DOOR!"
"I-I'm g-getting it." The boy whispered, tears spilling out of his eyes. His dad let go of him and stomped away to the living room, leaving Michael to wipe away some of his tears before opening the door and facing a wide-eyed Luke.
Michael smiled cockily, pretending like everything was fine, like he didn't just get hurt by his own father, but Luke's shocked expression stayed, making his stomach drop.
"W-was that you?" Luke asked in a breathy voice.
"Was who me?" Michael asked, pretending to be confused as he walked to the car, even though everything inside him was shrieking.
"T-there was yelling and you screamed and someone shoved you against the door." Luke explained in the same exasperated tone as before. Michael's eyes went wide in fear as he opened the door to the passenger seat, but he played it off with a small chuckle.
"No that was my dad, we were just playing around." He lied, laughing fakely.
"Didn't your dad move away to work with your mom in London?" Luke asked with a frown, steering the car through the road.
Michael bit his lip in panic. He thought that Luke had forgotten about the lie he told a year after his mom passed away. It seemed he hadn't and at this point, the green-haired boy just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry. It didn't help that his back was still in pain from earlier.
"He came back to s-see me." Michael lied yet again, smiling to cover it up.
Luke hummed, smiling cockily and averting the conversation to hot girls instead as they went to pick up their other two friends, which both relieved and upset Michael, who pretended to nod along and laugh.
He just wished he could tell Luke everything.
Part 2 coming when I can be bothered to write it. No-one's reading it but yeahhh.
