Rosie Jae
I walked into Nirvana Coffee seeing Liam scrolling on his phone at a small circle table near the window. I brushed off my skirt. I was wearing a white long sleeved lacy blouse and a denim skirt and white sneakers. He was in his swimming warm up tracksuit again, he must've just came from practice. I didn't know what to say, I felt myself starting to panic, so I quickly sat down.
"Hi," I said softly, a little breathless.
He looked up from his phone briefly, still scrolling, "Oh, hey Rosie," He said casually. I wanted him to look at me, but he didn't really seem as excited as I was to see him.
I felt a little stupid. I should've known he just wanted to study and copy my answers. I reluctantly grabbed my binder from my backpack and sat it on the table, he was still scrolling on his phone, a smirk on his face. He was probably texting all of his other friends that were way cooler and more attractive and outgoing than I was.
I sighed, "Do you want to start?" I asked.
He finally locked his phone, making eye contact with me. He looked at me briefly and then back again, longer and with this surprised look on his face. "Rosie, you look nice," He said in a surprised tone.
I blushed, "Thank you."
He looked down as the waitress came over, setting down two cups. "I ordered us pumpkin spice with almond milk," He said gesturing to the drinks.
I felt even more embarrassed because he remembered my order. I didn't want to show how excited I was.
"Oh," I said in shock. "Thank you, y-you didn't have to I could've bought my own it's-"
"Hey don't worry, it's on me," He said soothingly, parting my hand from across the table. The gesture made my stomach flutter.
I felt like he was the only person in the room. I was unknowingly feeling myself drown out the sounds around me. All I could really focus on for that short period of time was his soft tone, and his hand touching mine.
When he let go, I snapped out of it.
"Can we start on question ten? That's where I started to get stumped," He said quickly, as he flipped through our homework pages.
I nodded and took a sip of my coffee. It was perfect.
We started looking through the book for the answered and helping each other figure things out. Even though he seemed to be lost on a few answers, he knew a lot more about the subject than I did. It didn't really seem like he needed my help.
"Hey, you did this evaluation wrong. Did you read the genetic research chapter?" He asked, after reading over my work.
I shook my head no.
He furrowed his thick eyebrows at me, "That was our homework last night. You forgot?" He asked. I nodded. "Must've been busy partying right?" He asked with a little laugh.
I actually had fallen asleep after coloring and watching Frozen 2. I laughed, "N-No, just fell asleep early. At like seven. I forgot to read."
"You're so good, I go to sleep at like 4am every night," He sighed, shutting his book. You're so good. My chest felt funny, my head repeated be words over and over to me.
Suddenly, I didn't feel so bad anymore. Looking at him I felt less nervous than when I went into this. I thought he wouldn't like me and that he wanted something from me, but it wasn't that at all.
I smiled shyly, "Thank you."
He sighed, "Well we should be going, wouldn't want to disturb your sleep," He said putting his work back into his bag.
I nodded and I did the same, trying not to think to hard about how I was going to say goodbye yet. I just had to let it come and go at the right time.
"Hey make sure you get home safe okay?" He said as I headed for the door. I felt more butterflies at his approval.
"Okay," I said with a nod. And then I was on my way.
I felt like i liked him. I knew i did.
