the family, who were scattered around, were hiding in various places. they watched eagerly as a tired-looking yeosang, who had just woken up, emerged from the hallway.
as soon as he switched on the light, the family jumped out from their hiding places, all yelling "SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"
the surprise startled yeosang, but he quickly smiled.
"o-oh my g-g-god, y-you.. guys.." he giggled as they individually ran up to give him a hug.
yes, it was yeosangs 17th birthday.
the five oldest's second-to-last summer before college had begun a few weeks ago, things were moving quickly and it was a bit scary. the parents still felt as if it was yesterday that the boys were toddlers. and suddenly they were soon to be high school seniors, with college around the corner.
"we made breakfast for you!" "and we have a cake for later!" "after breakfast you should open presents!" "or we can go to the park!" "you can show us some skating tricks!"
seonghwa laughed as the boys listed options for activities. they were teenagers and still did the same things they did when they were toddlers.
eventually, after finishing his birthday breakfast, yeosang decided to open some presents.
once he opened all the ones from the family, he ended up getting a few gifts cards for his favorite restaurants from yunho, $20 and a little drawing from san, a small karaoke machine that mingi, wooyoung, and jongho all bought together, and a nintendo switch from the parents. he was pretty excited about everything.
after opening presents from relatives and such, yeosang decided he wanted to go to the beach for a little bit, since it was close, and the beaches had recently opened back up.
the family eagerly headed there, almost all of the boys immediately jumping into the water.
jongho decided to stay with the parents on their towels, under the umbrella, because he was still afraid of his self-harm scars being exposed in public. he was almost a month clean, but they still showed on his skin.
mingi, on the other hand, claimed he was tired and wanted to just lay on the towel instead of swim and get more worn out.
seonghwa, of course, was completely overthinking, worried sick that mingi's depression would return.
meanwhile, the other four were out by the water, with yeosang and yunho playing catch with a beach ball they brought, as san and wooyoung happily played around in the sand as if they were toddlers again. the parents found it adorable.
during yunho and yeosang's game of catch, yunho found himself constantly turning his head to check on his brothers.
god.. i can't even look away for ten seconds without worrying that something happened. is this normal? i'm being worse than mom. he thought, all while acting normal in yeosang's eyes.
he glanced over again, feeling relief at the sight of everyone safe and sound.
but he still had worrying thoughts.
