I stand when Kri enters. He's like a whirlwind. He walks in with his eyes fixed on me. He stands before me in seconds, his eyes raking over my form once.. twice.
His fingers clasp mine and his eyes finally leave mine to meet Bal's. Two seconds later, Bal is on the move, heading toward the swivel doors.
"What—"
"We're leaving."
With that he's tugging me onto the path and toward the door.
"Wait, wh—"
He opens the door manually and I stare at the action. When was the last time the door didn't open itself? I think back to the pool room and my bed room. Both had opened on their own. But that was over an hour ago.
He's got me inside the elevator in another second.
Twelve seconds later, I'm helped into a monstrosity of a car. The seatbelt does itself, then the harnesses snick into place. Jesus, this was worse than the previous car.
"Is this a military vehicle?" I whisper as Kri shuts my door and does his super-speed thing and arrives to his side of the door.
He's inside and the vehicle purrs so loudly, I start.
"Kri."
He reverses out of the spot and spins the vehicle about, the heel of his palm rotating the wheel. He's driving is nothing like it was before. There's no pleasure in it. Now it's mechanic, automated. Like he isn't thinking about it or enjoying it.
His gaze is a single laser beam fastened to the road, flicking left and right and up to check the mirrors continuously.
"Kri."
The energy he's giving off is palpable. The tension wound tight around him. When I concentrated, I could see the shadows shimmering along the lines of his body, shaking the air up a bit. As if they were agitated too.
"What happened?" I asked.
We were flying down the road, expertly manoeuvring through traffic. My gaze catches on the black cars that follow us. I do a quick count. Four.
"Why are there four cars tailing us?"
"They're my people." His words are clipped, short.
I stare at his profile for a long time, but his hardened jaw, his eyes that are blades of ice and his stern focus remain unchanged. Eventually, I just reach out and place my fingers over his hand that's splayed on his thigh.
Almost immediately, his eyes flick to me.
I notice for the first time, behind the hard glacial blue of his eyes, there's a barely sheathed wildness. He just about has it under control.
The harness kept me from moving a single damn inch, but, I could still turn his hand over and twine my fingers in the gaps between his.
His fingers snap closed around my hand as something hard and determined leaks into his eyes. And it ratchets up the dark wildness in his eyes. As if to prove this, the swirls of his eyes begin to spin as he slashed his gaze back onto the road.
It's only then that I notice the familiar winding mountain roads. I suck in a slow breath when I see the railings. They were fortified and raised.
Jerking my chin in the direction of the rails, I ask.
"Did you do this?"
His gaze barely flicks away from the road as we race across silent roads.
"I suggested it." He says. His voice was still low, words grinding out.
