THOUGH SHE FELT BETTER AFTER TALKING TO HER MUM, maison's stomach still churned with nerves as she shut the car door. she played with the bracelet clasped around her wrist. it was pure horse hair, taken from her palomino years ago. her brother, mack, had made it for her when she was fourteen. it was something she always wore. it reminded her of the good things at home, the things she can return to after a particularly hard day.

"have you met everyone yet?" she found herself asking austin as they walked to the building.

  "mmm," he hummed, thinking. "i met a few at auditions and chemistry reads but i'm not like, friends with them like drew or anything."

the pair approached the doors, the boy skipping a few steps ahead to hold one open for the blonde. she smiled at him, offering a quiet "thank you." he ruffled her hair in response.

"i hate when you do that." she frowned, running a hand through the now messy strands.

  "i hate you." he replied back childishly. maison rolls her eyes, shoving his shoulder. austin flicked her nose playfully in response. they proceeded to play fight, giggling all the while, not paying any attention to the people now watching them in amusement.

it wasn't until an important looking business man shot them a glare that they stopped, out of breath and struggling to hold back giggles.

nearly an hour later jonas pate ceased his disquisition about outer banks, finally releasing the cast to socialize. his children, lilah and cooper, were also there, seeming extremely lost.

maison wanted to go introduce herself, but she was approached by an african american man, instantly halting her actions.

"hey!" he exclaimed. austin snuck closer out of habit but if the boy took notice, he said nothing. "i'm jonathan. i'm a huge fan of your work! every track you produce is straight fire." he continued, speaking animatedly with his hands.

  smiling warmly, maison answered, "thank you, you're so sweet. that means a lot, really."

  "yeah of course!" jonathan nodded, tone still one of excitement. "but can i ask what you're doing here? i mean marvel movies to a netflix show is kinda a downgrade to be honest."

  maison really didn't want to answer. if she said that austin recommended her, what would everyone think? that she got all her jobs like that? that maybe good ole uncle chris pulled a lot of strings to get her where she was?

  luckily, a girl with a blond boy practically attached to her hip interrupted. maison forced the thoughts from her head, trying to focus on her dazzling smile and pretty face.

  "hey y'all! i'm madison." she exclaimed, eyes bright and smile wide.

  "i'm rudy." the boy beside her smiled, eyes drifting across the three adults.

it's then that another girl, dirty blonde and of average height, sauntered over asking, "what kind of party's going on over here?"
