I was so upset that Kavan was gone. I asked father to have him searched for. After all he had done for me. That was the least I could do for him. I could bring his body back home to his people.
Mortal was out searching for Kavan. He had brought back home the sea witch's body. Not that I cared about her. Maybe though because Kavan's body was not found that meant he was still alive out there. Right? He could be around?
His body should be where the witch's body was located at. I had been having nightmares about meeting Kavan's one true love over and over in my head. I had to find him.
For her and for me. If his body was brought back home, then she would have some comfort to. I can't imagine being in love with someone who was to wed someone else. It was so unfair for her and Kavan.
It was not her fault I ended up falling in love with him. That was all my fault. It was just, I had never met anyone like him before in my life.
He was the most amazing man I ever had known. Well merman that I had ever known. I knew that I would never be able to forget him. I brush my hair as I sit at my vanity before going to bed that night.

"Daughter may I enter?" father asks as he stands in my doorway.
"Of course!," I answer back.
"Are you happy with your room? We can get you a bigger room. A better room" offers my father as he fusses over me.
"I am fine father. Thank you. I just am not sure if I can live under the sea. I am not sure how to get used to it. Or be used to myself now. I know I should have always been a mermaid. And I should not be human. That I should be here this whole time. And how much you missed me. I thought about you to all my life. Who you were. Where you were. But I miss my home. My mother who raised me is worried about me and I know misses me" I admit. "I am not sure if I can ever get used to being here" I warn him.
"But daughter you are to take my place. And rule over your people" father tells me.
I wince. "If Kavan had lived and maybe he was going to rule beside me then I might have wanted to stay more father. I am trying. I am not going anywhere. I can't" I remind him.
"You and Kavan had grown close as he looked out for you?" asks father.
I nod then smile. "We grew very close" I admit softly. "I can't believe he is dead. And that he had another loved who he promised his heart to" I mutter.
"You are unhappy here" sighs father.
"But it is not your fault father" I say. "I love being here and getting to know you. And mother. To know who I truly am. I do love that" I say. "Besides I can't return"
"You could" he says. "As I returned Kavan before" he admits. "I am the sea king. I have powers dear girl"
"You can?" I gasp. "That is right" I say. "You helped Kavan to return"
He nods. "But I wish you would give your real home a real chance" he begs of me.

He places a hand on my shoulder.
"I will father. For you" I offer.
"Please get to know Mortal as well. He is a wonderful merman. He is everything like Kavan. I think he could grow on you. He is eager to rule this kingdom. He is the only other one I would trust with you. I have known his family my whole life long dear. He has protected me as well" Father tells me.
"I shall give it all a chance father. But I am not sure my heart could ever love another the way it once loved before" I softly remark.
"I understand daughter. I never stopped loving your mother. You look so much like her" he wistfully says. "she would be thrilled you returned to us"
I hug him. "I love you father" I reply.
"I love you to. Think over what I asked of you. But if later you are not happy, I shall return you to land" he vows. "I only want what is best for you" he says softly.

He touches my chin with his hand then smiles. He swims out of the room.
Love another. I was expected to marry and take over a kingdom. Just like that! I never held a job for long much less ruled over and entire ocean. Love another?
Surly I could find something to love about Mortal. Did he have another mermaid waiting around for him as did Kavan? I shoo bitter thoughts away from my head. So much was on my mind right now.
"Princess!" I hear someone speak up.
I turn my head to see Mortal there.
"Have you found Kavan?" I beg to know as I swim to his side.
He shakes his head. "No body has been recovered yet princess" he warns me. "I am deeply sorry"
"Thank you for letting me know" I softly answer.
"Did you love him?" he wonders.
"I cared a great deal for my protector. He did his job" I answer. "we were friends"
"He did his job then" agrees Mortal. "as shall I. I will always be here to look out for you Elissa. I was born to. And be your ruler. I would make a wonderful one"
"I am sure you would. The thing is Mortal I am not used to being a mermaid. Or being here" I admit. "I am homesick" I admit.
"You will get used to things Princess. Everyone is thrilled you are back home" he tells me. "no one is loved more than you" he brags.
I smile. "Thank you. I hope I will have this place grow on me" I chuckle. "tell me about Serine and Kavan" I ask. "What do you know about them?"
"Well they have grown up together. They fell in love though he was not supposed to. He knew his whole life was planned out for him. He was the best one to be the next king. He would have made a fine king. I even admit that. Mind if you take a swim with me? I can show you parts of the kingdom you never saw before" offers Mortal.
"Alright. Sure" I agree with a smile.
It was a nice night for a walk. Time to get to know this place. And get to know my people.
And see what I wanted to do. I would give this place a chance. For my father and for the people. They needed me. And I knew that. They had been waiting on my return.
