CHAPTER 1

ROSE

I.A.A.N, that's the disease that wiped out most of the kids in my neighborhood, almost 90% of the population of children died because of this but sometimes I wonder, "how am i still alive". I always thought I was like the other kids but I was beyond them.

~Rose's Bedroom~ 

Today is my tenth birthday, my parents come into my room chanting the famous 'happy birthday' song.

"Happy Birthday to you", they both say in unison. I smile not knowing that this might be my last birthday I'll spend with them.

They both come sit with me on my bed, my mom on my right and my dad on my left. 

"Happy Birthday sweetie", my dad says while giving me a side hug.

I smile at both of them and open my gift, it was a gudetama on a small chain, I look at both my parents before thanking them both.

"This is the one i wanted", I say with excitement in my voice.

"When you're 16 you can put that on some car keys", my mom jokes.

My dad lets out a nervous sigh, he might be thinking what any other parent would be thinking"how long does my child have to live".

"Dad I'll be fine, don't worry", I look up at him.

Both my parents hug me before turning off my lights and tucking me into bed.

I toss and turn for what seems like all night,"I can't sleep", I thought to myself.

I slowly got up and walked to my parent's room lying next to mom and holding her hand.

"Don't worry daddy and mommy, we'll all be ok", I whisper.

I squeeze my mother's hand tighter but only for a bright light to flash my eyes as if I was going through her body at lightspeed. I gasp from how startled I got and slowly backed away from both my parents and run back to my room.

Next Morning

I hop out of bed and quickly walk to the kitchen. I see my mother making breakfast a daily routine for her.

I slowly walk up to her,"Mommy, my head hurts".

She quickly turns my way, by her face I'm guessing she was startled.

"How'd you get into here", she says while looking around."Are you lost?"

"Why are you talking like that, I live here, you're my mom", I say with a hurt expression on my face.

"Can you tell me your name?", she says while still looking around. 

"M-mommy what's wrong", I say tears threatening to come out my eyes.

"I'm not your mommy", she says slowly shaking her head. 

I look at her in disbelief, "why doesn't she remember me". 

"come with me", she says while leading me to the garage.

"Did I do something wrong", I say with a scared tone.

She sits me down by the door and leaves.

"what's going on", I thought to myself.

Some strange men with yellow suits walk in, slowly inching towards me with every step they take. They grab me swiftly and carry me out of the garage.

~30 Minutes Later~

"Thurmond Air Force Base", that's what the sign said.

"MOVE, LET'S GO", the soldiers shout at us. We all run out the bus not wanting to know what would happen if we didn't. 

"DO NOT TRY TO RUN, DON'T SAY A WORD", they continue shouting at us.

A kid slowly comes off the bus, looking rather irritated , "HEY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING", the guard shout at him.

"PISS OFF", he yells as he tries to run away. They stop him before he got too far. 

Everybody gasp as the guard watching slowly lifts his weapon to his head and shoot himself. 

"HE'S USING HIS SPECIALS, HE'S ORANGE", the guards shout as they continue going after the boy. "GET EVERYBODY INSIDE", the guards continue to yell. 

We all rush into the base in a straight line. "I wanna go home", I thought to myself.
