Chapter 8: The Odds of Losing a Game.
"Sky! Would you put it down please?" Cassidy said, next to me. I was so engrossed in solving Sudoku that I didn't bother replying.
"Don't you think you should talk to us? It is supposed to be a vacation, Sky!" Cassidy yelled at me.
"Hmm," I hummed at her. Currently, we were at a roadside cafe waiting for our food. By 'we' I mean, Brain, Rachel, Cassidy, Nathaniel and I. I didn't expect the vacation to happen so quickly. They didn't even give me a day to pack. I think I will be surprised when I open my own luggage. I was so distracted by Lucas's wrongdoing that I didn't even pay attention to what I had packed for a vacation on Nathaniel's mansion by the lake. Yes, that is where we were headed. That was our vacation. And, not to mention we were driving there. All through our drive till now, I had kept myself busy by solving Sudoku. I didn't want to talk to anybody. Honestly, I wanted to be alone, but it seemed like a fantasy now. I have been alone, literally my whole life, even when I didn't want to. But now that I am dying to be alone, I won't get to be!
"Nathan, please take her phone." I heard Cassidy say in a stern voice. But, before I could register and react to what she had said, a large hand snatched my phone away from me.
"Give it back!" I whined, looking at Nathan and trying my best to get it back but his hands were too long for me to be able to reach my phone. "Timer is on! Give it back!"
"I'll pause it, okay?" Nathan said and I sat back quietly, my eyes looking at his finger tips intently, until he paused the timer and clicked on the power button. Then, he put it in his jeans's pocket.
"Ugh! I am going to wash my hands!" I was so irritated and my irritation was evident in my voice when I excused myself to go to the washroom.
"Is she always like that?" I heard Rachel ask as I got away from the table. I sighed.
I was in the middle of a game!
I made my way to the washroom and spent as much time as I could while washing my hands and drying them. I was wary of spending too much time because I didn't want Rachel and Cassidy to come looking for me.
I got back and saw Cassidy sitting on my spot — the chair next to Nathaniel. Why didn't she sit there in the first place? Oh yes, because Nathaniel came and sat next to me first. I haven't even talked to him once. I tried to ignore him as much as possible. I didn't want to embarrass myself again. But, whenever I looked at him, seven out of ten times, I would catch him looking at me. It seemed like he was waiting for something embarrassing to happen to me. Or maybe something else. I would've known if his gaze emanated words.
Just like those seven out of ten times, I saw him looking at me as I sat down in Cassidy's place. Right in front of him. Facing Nathaniel was one of the many things I didn't want to do today.
When will this vacation end?
"C'mon, guys! Keep your phones away," Rachel clapped, "let's play that game, what's it called? I forgot. The one where you put down your finger, if you've done something that is asked."
Everybody shrugged their shoulders and I rolled my eyes. Another game? Seriously?
"Sky, don't roll your eyes at Rachel. It is rude." Cassidy chided me. Am I a child? I have been scolded so many times already today! Everything Cassidy and her friends said or did, it was like they've stepped on a mine in my brain.
You know what else is rude? Snatching somebody's phone when they're in the middle of a a game.
"Whoever loses will make us dinner tonight!" Brian yelled. "No ordering in, no help from the servants, although there won't be any. Because we'll be alone in that house!"
