Piper McLean was the worst person in the world. Or, she was the worst person in the world as far as Kaitlynn Humes was concerned.
It wasn't that McLean was mean to Kaitlynn. Actually she was kind of really nice. But Kaitlynn was sure there was something fake about her. There was absolutely no way that half the boys and girls in their grade were completely obsessed with someone that looked like that, if she didn't have more to her. No one normal had that many people hanging off their every word when their hair was a choppy mess with weird feathers braided in and freaky eyes that never stayed the same colour for more than a second.
Anyways the main reason that Kaitlynn hated Piper was that her boyfriend had broken up with her to try and score a date with Piper, and, he was so infatuated that when Piper had for some reason rejected him, he hadn't gone running back to Kaitlynn like all her friends assured her he would!
But today, it was all going to be fine, because today, a new boy was starting, and Kaitlynn was in charge of giving him a tour.
——
She was waiting around at the receptionist's office when He walked in.
He was absolutely gorgeous. Tall, blond, broad but not too big, excellent cheekbones and jawline, hint of muscle under his shirt, the only things marring his beauty were the gold wire glasses and the scar on his lip.
Clearly fate had made her boyfriend break up with her so that she could get with this guy.
"Hi cutie!" Kaitlynn simpered, stalking over to him, hips swaying. "Welcome to North Stone High! I'm Kaitlynn Humes, I'm gonna be showing you around today. What's your name?"
The guy looked kind of awkward, but that was probably because he was so deeply in love with her that he couldn't think. "Uh..I'm Jason. Jason Grace."
"Cute name." She grinned. "So what brings you here?"
"Oh, Uh, my girlfriend goes here, and I moved into the area so..seemed a good school to go to."
"Girlfriend?" Just her luck. Probably some nerdy bitch that Jason would soon break up with now that he'd met her.
"Yeah. Piper McLean? Do you know her?"
What. The. Fuck.
"Piper? Oh, um no not really. We're not close."
He nodded absently, craning his head this way and that as they walked around school. Kaitlynn tried to appear interested in the tour - she could hardly break them up if he thought she was shallow - but her heart was no longer in it.
It wasn't like she was expecting deep down for Jason and Piper to be awkward and juvenile with each other, but she also wasn't expecting the unadulterated joy that lit up Jason's face, taking him to a whole new level of gorgeous, when he spotted Piper in the canteen.
"Pipes!" He called, grinning as Piper turned around from her conversation and lit up with a similar expression.
"Jay!" Piper made her way quickly to them, and if Kaitlynn didn't believe in true love before, she certainly did then. They didn't even kiss at first, just hugged each other, foreheads presses together.
"I missed you so much." Piper murmured. "What are you doing here?"
"Neeks got us kicked out of the school we were at, so he's gone to join Will, and I'm here." Jason replied, equally soft.
"I need to buy that boy a gift. Do you think he'll like a fruit basket?"
"Nah. Maybe a basket with different types of pasta in it."
"I don't even care." Piper said after a minute of them laughing. "I'm just so glad you're here."
——
They got along much better after that. Once Kaitlynn managed to stop seeing Piper as a threat, she was actually pretty cool. She convinced Kaitlynn to stop focusing on boys, and take a minute for herself, and even if they lost touch for a year in between high school and college, since they both took a gap year, they fell right back into their friendship as soon as they moved into a dorm together.
So yeah, maybe Piper McLean was alright.
