RIDE OR DIE

Chapter 2

I didn't know what to say... So, I said nothing.

I kept a straight face to make it seem like I was unfazed at the words he had suddenly blurted out. I mentally frowned at how easy it was for me to have to hide my emotions but I quickly brushed that aside. I refocused on the situation at hand. Well, it's impossible that he's a mind-reader even though he more or less finished my sentence for me. But what does he see that he thinks is beautiful?

I held my solemn expression as I crossed my arms and I raised an eyebrow at him, letting him know that I heard his slip up. No sane person in this world would have said something like that intentionally to a stranger. Not unless they wish for a slap in their face.

Green Eyes was the first to break his gaze and directed his attention at his cousin. "¿Y quién se supone que es ella? (And who is she supposed to be?)" he said to her. What the-? I'm standing right here you know?

I was planning on speaking up, but Hana beat me to it. "Esta es mi mejor amiga, Anna. Y ella puede hablar español, ¿sabes? (This is my best friend, Anna. And she can speak Spanish, you know?)"

From behind me, I could feel the confusion radiating off the boys at the exchange, but thanks to my multilingualism, I can speak Spanish just as good as the natives. Yeah, that's right. Let's see what you gotta say about that.

Jerkface took a glance at me and raked his eyes up and down my figure like he was trying to read me. Good luck trying to do that.

"Bueno, si ese es el caso, entonces lo entenderá cuando le diga que incluso un pitufo es más alto que ella. (Well, if that's the case then she'll understand when I tell her that even a smurf is taller than she is.)" he stated and I didn't miss the hint of smugness as he spoke. Woah, woah, woah! Now, hold up just a second...

Did this guy seriously think that a puny insult on my height will pry a reaction out of me? I wanted to frown at him but continued to remain nonchalant.

"Don't you talk about my friend like that, you imbecile! She's not that short," scolded Hana as she smacked the 'imbecile' at the back of his head. Really, Hana? I inwardly groaned. I heard a 'finally' being uttered by someone behind me. Of course I didn't forget about Nate and Johnny whose Spanish vocabulary only consisted of hola and adios, which was another reason, besides annoying Jerkface, why I didn't contribute to the conversation.

Jerkface seemed to have just realized that there were more than three people here. He straightened himself and took a step forward. "My apologies. Luca Giovanni Romano. Pleased to meet you," he extended his hand over my head to Johnny for a shake.

The nerve of this guy...

"You too," Johnny shook his hand. "I'm Jonathan Simone but you can call me Johnny."

"Johnny," Jerkface nodded at him.

"That's me. I was beginning to think that I was gonna need to hire a personal translator," Johnny joked.

"Same here," agreed Nate. "You should have seen how it was like when I went over to Gigi's that day. I only understood the part when we were about to have lunch, and only because I saw her mom put the food on the table," he chuckled. Everyone chuckled along with him, except for Hana who facepalmed instead, and me who stayed silent.

"Once again, I apologise to the both of you for my inconsideration. It's just that whenever I speak to Gigi it's mostly in Spanish. But now I see I'm going to have to get used to speaking in English when I'm with her because I bet wherever she is you guys won't be far away," he explained before adding, "Oh, and to Johnny, I don't see any reason to waste good money on a translator when you have one right here." Luca jerked his chin at me. "That's at least what I got from what I've been told. That is, only if she knows how to actually speak the language." He lowered his eyes to meet mine.
