Chapter 3: Scatter by the Wind

Keefe's Pov

School finally ended. By that time, I had found no less than 5 rose petals just casually appearing near me. Where were they coming from? They were really pretty. Just like Foster. Good thing she didn't see how I looked at the petals, and her.

Sophie's Pov

I don't think he knows. But I did see the petals. And I saw through that mask he likes to wear whenever he's upset. I could always see through it. What was he hiding? Those rose petals too. They looked like my eyes. Why do they just keep appearing? The way that Keefe admires them... Am I missing something? No. Couldn't be. I'm probably overthinking it.

Keefe's Pov

Okay, this is seriously messed up. I wasn't sure what to do, so as soon as school ended, I ran over to Dex. "Hey. Can we talk?"

Dex raised an eyebrow. "Are you serious? The only thing you ever want to talk about is either Sophie or your pranks."

That kinda hurt. Nonetheless, I carried on. "Yes, I'm dead serious."

"Suits yourself then. Come on, I'm just going to Rimshire."

"Thanks." That was all I could manage as I started coughing again.

Dex noticed. "You know, I think we should get you a coughing elixir while you're there." He turned away and walked into the leapmaster.

He didn't notice the shower of loose rose petals that once again had appeared at my feet. "What is going on?" I wondered out loud.

"What is going on?" Dex looked bewildered as I showed him the flower petals.

"That's exactly what I keep asking myself. And, for your information, I have absolutely no idea what's going on." I sighed.

"And you're saying that they just appear after you cough?"

"Seems like it. Do you know what it is?" I issued another series of coughs, unknowingly blanketing Dex's bed with the petals.

Dex's eyes widened. "I see you're not kidding."

"Do you think I would kid about this?"

"Sometimes, yeah." Dex looked deep in thought. "I think I have a vague idea of what it is, but I'm not sure. I think I'll check some books for it."

"Sure." That was all I really had to say. "Keep me updated!" With that, I leaped away.

Dex's Pov

I kinda lied to Keefe. I knew exactly what was going on. But I didn't want to tell him. I've seen so many movies and books from the forbidden cities, that the topic came up a bunch. One-sided love. I didn't want to think too much about it. It was completely fictional! A figment of some random guy's imagination! But... I saw it with my own eyes, didn't I? That was real. That definitely wasn't just a silly prank. But... how do you fix something like this? Sure, I don't really like Keefe. But that doesn't mean he has to die.
