After the week we had spent in the Lytes' slammer, Johnny's punishment had been controversial, over hanging or a trial. In the end a trial was decided on and he had successfully convinced the jury. He had left me a message; on December 1st, the day of my execution, he had promised to come back to rescue me. The past week, I had found out he was a pretty great person after all. A bit of a tease, can sometimes be cocky... but on the inside, a soft-hearted, determined and caring boy. When I had found out about his past fiancé, I was a bit saddened-but it did not matter, for I was to be dead in a few days.
I had overheard Lavinia Lyte that she would go into the Lapham household as she had heard of a beautiful, goddess-like young girl, on the day of my execution. I had assumed it must be Johnny's fiancé-of course he would go to save her instead of me. I had tried to find a plan of escape-mostly consisting of breaching the security system with brute force, but realized that the security of the Lytes were too great to overcome for one poorly fed, lone-eyed girl and a bulletless gun. To my great surprise, just when I was to be taken away, he had burst into the room in a hideous disguise, grabbed my wrist, and hauled me out, to safety while the security had been preparing my execution. When we were running back to what he had called the Boston Observer, I had seen Lavinia Lyte in a horse carriage-with two young girls. He had seen that, and immediately after he'd dropped me off at the newspaper company, he'd galloped off gracefully on a beautiful horse. I had sat there, confused at the sudden events that had occurred, as Rab-an apprentice there had explained to me that Johnny had known of Cilla-his fiancé's situation, and yet had decided to come back and save me. Maybe I was important to someone after all-just, a little.
