I. Last Name Basis

It wasn't Marnie's fault that she was brought up calling people by their last names. It was habit, force of habit. Literally. If she called anyone by their first name she'd be punished for it, her sanction prohibited attachment, or emotions in general. Her guardian fucked her over so many times because she was on first name basis with some friends. It didn't bother Marnie, not anymore, blank thoughts replaced her guardian's anger if she was being disciplined. She just had to respond with 'Yes.' And she could once again be on her way, living her solemn life of solitude. It hurt her nose, the smell of factory smoke and mechanical shit, it was almost her two year anniversary, if you could call it that, of moving into the sanction. Two whole years of being sent to the frontline, nothing of the guns and tanks, assured. Actually, they were against the good guys. Surprisingly, Marnie wasn't so surprised by the fact that they were the villains all along, she could see how bad it was - very, very clearly.

Her sanction, respectively known as the strictest, lived up to the reputation the others had given it. They didn't even have a name for it, just 'sanction', Marnie assumed it was because they were so dedicated to emotions being unacceptable that they didn't bother with names, even to their own land. She didn't care, she didn't care for many things, although she did used to, but then she was old enough to enter battle and it spiraled after that. Taken to a factory like site, the grey buildings dry with grease and smoke, a firm, sticky mixture puddled on the floor. She was always stationed on the far right of the sanction, never being able to venture towards the middle or left since it was out of bounds. It didn't matter to her, the right side was all she knew, where she grew up. Immediately trained harder than her other comrades, unfortunately. Maybe it was because she was originally a good, pure girl; surely a softer soldier than the rest, but did she deserve to go through such hell so quickly? If anything, her guardian, counter productively names Ms. Kin, was most possibly the bane of her existence. It was mostly a push and shove relationship, and then Marnie would take it into a push and shove harder situation, unfortunately. She didn't want to call herself a trouble maker, but she definitely wasn't going to be a pushover to the woman that wanted to gut her on the sanction floor.

'Station!'

Marnie sprang up off of her bed, awakened by the sudden intrusion of the ever-pleasant Ms. Kin, whom she could sense giving her a shit eating smile, just from the fact she already ruined Marnie's day. Her station lined up compact and neatly in front of their bunkers, Well I guess social distancing is a no. She remarked, fidgeting in place as she turned her attention to the floor, not wanting to face Kin, who was ready to proceed with her orders. 'Soldiers, you will welcome your new recruit. His name is Reven. He comes from the neutral sanction, like most of you.' Marnie remembered the neutral sanction, very well. It was the last place she felt happy and in place, she had someone to care about, and someone cared about her. She was told the someone fell in battle, going in one year before Marnie did herself, since then, Marnie had no intention of doing anything worth the sanction's time, seeing it as their mistake for her fallen comrade. She looked up at Reven, maybe the same age, maybe a couple inches taller than Marnie, who was 5'6. What struck her most was his face, it didn't take a genius to spot that Reven's upper right forehead faded into a scaled, purple mass, and his ear was protruding, pointed upwards in the same shade of scaley purple. 'Marnie. You will be assisting Reven at this station, you must accompany him until he has had his first mission, which will be with your squadron.' Kin ordered, ushering the new boy towards Marnie, and leaving the room just as quickly as she pushed him.

Upon closer look, Reven looked like he couldn't hurt a fly, his small stature almost baffled Marnie, how could they let such an innocent boy join their sanction? And why wasn't Kin threatening him for being so, pure?? It wasn't fair, not to Marnie. She already built up a dislike to the new kid, but she decided to take the chance with him.

Maybe he could help her.
