(3rd person p.o.v)
The morning of the fire, Afet had show and tell at school and she was taking her mother's old, metal cooking pot that made the best stew. Afet was already late, and she had forgotten to kiss her parents and little sister goodbye. After school, she had been invited to her friend’s house across the street. They played for hours in the garden, and in the evening, Afet was ready to head back home. She was crossing the street when in an instant all the buildings caught fire. The sight paralyzed her as the screams of people filled the street. She stood there, jaw dropped in horror and dropped the cooking pot she was holding with a loud “CLANG”, that echoed through the burning street, the noise somehow blending in with the shrieks of the victims. Tears rolled down her eyes, as she looked at the sight before her.The whole place was burning in flames, all the three buildings had been blackened with soot. Trees erupt in flames as firemen ran around trying to subside it. Cries of pain are heard in every direction as the helpers try to salvage what's left of families. Smoke erupted from every nook and cranny, polluting the normally calm, ever blue sky. Firemen were trying to put out the fire, with no luck, as the flames took over all the buildings, claiming their territory. There was chaos everywhere.
10 year old-Afet, sat on the footpath, with her head between her legs, clutching her wool doll as her knuckles turned white. Reality of the situation sunk into her head and that was all it took for her to fully start crying, something she barely did. The cries of the victims were permanently engraving themselves into her brain. Bodies of dead friends and relatives were disposed of in a heap on the other side of the road, among them were her parents and younger brother. She couldn’t see much through all the tears, but she knew her sister Hakki, was there too.
Four men, who had never been seen in the neighborhood before, appeared in a black SUV and joined the police official talking in small voices, occasionally pointing at Afet. They handed the man a black leather folder and nodded their heads for him to open it. He pulled out a bulky brown envelope that had something scribbled on the top, as well as a white booklet that had a mosaic of pictures on different pages. The man's eyes went wide with fear and he looked at the four men standing in front of him. He shook his head and looked back at Afet who still had her head between her legs, sobbing for all she was worth.
He looked down at the booklet and said a few words to the four men before walking away. The four men turned to Afet and began talking softly among themselves. The oldest of the four walked up to Afet and handed her a small music box. She lifted her head, slowly and turned to face the one who interrupted her soundless weeping. Her face was tear streaked and blotchy, the smile she usually wore was wiped off her face, and replaced by nothing but sadness. She took the music box and looked at the old man. He whispered something in her ear and told her to follow him. She did as she was told and followed the old man back to his group, taking baby steps as she trudged behind him.
They all bent down to her height and held her small hands. She looked at each of them with sad eyes and a broken heart and told them where she was when the fire broke out. The men nodded their heads for her to go on, whenever she stopped to gasp for air.
The four men listened and looked around as if they were on the watch for someone. When they noticed that no one but them was concentrating on the 10-year old girl, the old man picked her up in his arms and walked towards the SUV. They put her in the back seat, and injected her with a sea blue liquid that instantly put her to muted sleep.
They shut the door of the SUV and got in themselves, turning away from the driveway and disappearing into the night, their tires screeching in the ruined silence.
Afet was looked for by the child protection service, but after three years of no success they gave up and believed she, as well, was a victim of the terrible, horrific fire.
