Chapter 8: Into The Mindscape

Nia Nal stirred to consciousness inside of the Coluan's mindscape, and although her vision was slightly blurry from the strain of breaking through Brainiac's resilient mind she could see well enough to let the look of her surroundings sink in. The architecture was unlike anything she had seen on Earth, in fact it reminded her of the interior of Brainiac's ship.

Everything around her is metallic silver and neon purple, it all looks extremely scientific and futuristic. It's so bright it hurts her eyes so she blinks and wipes at them for a long time before she can actually see anything but a blur. Nia rolls slowly to her other side, trying to ignore the dizziness that makes her feel disoriented.

There's a large pond of water, and a vast technological haven beyond that, it looks like something you would see in a hollywood movie about the future. She focuses on the water,  mesmerized by the way it moves, swirling in a spiral, defying all aspects of what water should act like and... there's a person literally standing on the lake.

The strange world tilts, then settles. She waits for something bad to happen, but nothing does. Everything stays the same even the figure on the water. She rises to her feet, moving forward as she looks into the distance, watching the figure sit down. As she moved ever closer, the figure came more into view and she smiles as she sees that it is Brainy. He looks so happy and carefree as he sits in front of a mirror, and she then realizes he's wearing a suit.

Nia opened her mouth to greet him, only for her words to become lost as she saw the most blissful smile that she had ever seen plastered across his face. She wondered what could make him so happy, but her question was answered as she saw the photo he held tightly in his hands was of her and him. "Nia!" Brainy exclaimed, turning around when he finally noticed the woman in the mirror. "What are you doing here?"

"I-" Nia tried to speak, but that was all she got out before being interrupted.

"You know we're not supposed to see each other before the wedding." He smiled, standing and pulling Nia into a bone crushing hug before pulling back and frowning, "And your not dressed? Why are you not dressed? Are you getting cold feet?" He asked, sadness etched into his words.

After blinking a few times to try and clear her head Nia began again. "Brainy-"

"I love you." He softly added while wrapping his hands around her back and gently pulling her closer. "Truth be told, I'm terrified too. It's what we have talked about for a year now, our wedding! It's finally here and I'll be there with you every step of the way. But, it is your choice Nia Nal, and I'll respect and love you no matter what you choose." If that speech wasn't mind blowing enough Brainy lent forward and pressed his lips against hers softly. She couldn't help but relax into the kiss, after all it felt exactly like the real ones they had shared.

She hadn't been sure what to expect when she had gone into Brainiac's mind to free Brainy, but she could have never imagined this. She knew all this was wrong, that this was just a fake reality Brainy was blissfully trapped in to prevent his escape, so she slowly broke away from the kiss. Brainy then pulled back with a hurt expression on his face.

"This... it's not real." She whispered.

There was a rumbling in the distance and then Brainy softly asked. "What?"

"This isn't real. Nothing about this is real." Nia said firmly, fully committing to pulling away from the hug which caused another rumble in the distance. "Nothing but us."

Brainy gulped. "Nia... you are not making sense."

"It's a dream Brainy. This whole world is a dream." Nia started to explain, stopping when the ground suddenly shook beneath her, prompting Brainy to squeeze and grab hold of her to keep her steady. Nia continued after a few moments. "You're a prisoner! We are not getting married. Brainy, you need to snap out of it."
