This is a 40's Bucky x reader oneshot. I'm gonna try to write some more normal stuff soon, I promise. This is before Steve got into the army too. Also, I have no idea what really goes on in a military base, so sorry if some stuff is inaccurate.

Bucky was called into the tent of the general.

"You wanted to see me, sir?" he asked nervously.

"Yes, Sergeant, I wanted to see you," he responded with no emotion, adding to Bucky's nervousness. "It says here that you won this battle almost on your own?"

"Yes, sir, me and four other soldiers were the only ones who entered the German base. Everyone else was too afraid," Bucky confirmed.

"Who were the other soldiers?" the general asked.

"Brooks, Sanders, Thomas, and Nelson, sir."

"Very well, I'll speak to them next. It says here in your file that in training, you were always the first to finish your laps by almost 10 minutes every time? And the first to rise when you were called in the morning?" the general went on.

"Yes, sir, that is all true, but I can assure you I didn't cheat when I ran," Bucky replied, biting his lip. Had he done something wrong?

"And you got a bad cut on your leg 3 months ago when you invaded the German base with the 4 others."

"Yes, sir, I did get a pretty bad cut, but it's healed now," Bucky said.

"But you didn't stop fighting, and you weren't in the hospital for as long as recommended because you were healing quickly, and against army rules you never went home?" the general prodded.

Bucky's heart sank. So he had done something wrong. "Yes sir, that is all correct, but I wasn't aware that I was supposed to go home. The nurses said I was allowed to come back here."

The general looked at Bucky as Bucky held his breath. "Sergeant Barnes," the general began, "you are the best soldier in all of America." Bucky's heart skipped a beat. Did he just say-

"Sir?" Bucky asked, looking confused.

"I've seen every file on every soldier in America. You are the best and most hardworking one," the general explained. "I think," he continued, "that you deserve a reward, and I have come to a decision. You get to go home. For 2 weeks."

Bucky gaped at him in shock. "Thank you sir, thank you so much!" Bucky exclaimed, trying to contain himself from dancing around the room.

"You leave in 2 days and you should arrive in Brooklyn the day after you board the train. Your 2 weeks start from there. I suggest you pack whatever you want to bring with you." He saw the sparkle in Bucky's eye and as Bucky was leaving the tent, the general asked, "You got a girl back home?"

Bucky turned around, the thought of you bringing a smile to his face. "Yes, sir, I do. Her name's (Y/N). She's the most beautiful, thoughtful, loving girl I'll ever meet."

The  general nodded knowingly. "You got a picture?" he asked. Bucky nodded. He always carried a picture of you with him wherever he was. He pulled out the picture and unfolded it, showing it to the general. The general saw the picture and made a face showing he was impressed. He smiled at Bucky.

"Go home to (Y/N), Sergeant Barnes."

                                                                *Time Skip*

Bucky stepped off the train in Brooklyn. He sighed happily, knowing when got home he would surprise his favorite girl with his arrival. Bucky never forgot the way to your apartment. He happily ran up the stairs to the 5th floor of your building and knocked on the door. Please open, he silently pleaded. Please open. Just as he was about to knock again, the door opened slowly. You saw him standing there and gasped, swinging the door open the rest of the way.
"Hey, doll!" Bucky laughed. You threw yourself into his arms and wrapped your legs around him.

"Bucky, you're home, you're home," you whispered into his neck.

"I'm home, doll," he said.

"Let's go in, yeah?" you asked, Bucky carrying you inside. You sat down on the couch together, you snuggling into his chest. "I missed you," you mumbled.

"I missed you too, doll. I always had your picture with me." You looked at him in surprise for a moment, you weren't expecting that.

"Really?" you asked.

"Always... (Y/N), I love you," Bucky said, looking you in the eye.

You replied without hesitation. "I love you too." He leaned down slowly and kissed you. You kissed back without hesitation. You both pulled away after a bit, needing air. "Hey Buck?" you asked. He hummed in acknowledgement to your question. "How long will you be here?" you asked. You were expecting him to say 3 days. Or less. His answer surprised you.

"2 weeks. I get to be here for two weeks," he said. "And the general said I'm the best soldier in all of America," he finished, smiling proudly.

"You were always the best soldier, Buck," you whispered. "I love you."

"I love you too, (Y/N)," he responded just as softly, before you fell asleep in each other's embrace.
