i groaned as i pressed the elevator button. it was a saturday night and gideon had called us in on what he called an 'emergency'.
"you look angry." i heard elle say as the doors opened, revealing the whole team.
"and hot, hey girl what's up?" morgan smirked at me.
spencer looked at his teammate with worried eyes, a fact i overlooked as i pushed past morgan to stand next to him.
"shut up, morgan." hotch said as leaned against the wall and closed my eyes.
"why didn't you like...change? before we got here." elle asked me, the elevator starting to ascend.
i scoffed, throwing my hands up,"gideon said it was an emergency, i didn't think i had time. what's with the third degree? not all of us like v-necks and bootcut jeans, elle."
she chuckled,"nighttime work makes you grumpy."
"laine, do you know who we're meeting in a few minutes?" spencer asked, looking at me incredulously.
i shrugged,"some guy with a cold case."
an offended look painted spencer's face as the doors dinged open and we walked out,"so they've been in there all night?"
"apparently." hotch answered as we made our way to the conference room.
"well, where else would any of us be on a saturday night? not like we have lives or anything." i quipped.
"speak for yourself." morgan replied, looking at me cockily.
"guys, we're about to meet max ryan," spencer said excitedly, like i was supposed to know who that was,"the guy responsible for catching the boise child killer," he looked over at hotch, "have you talked to him before?"
i looked back, curious for his answer. if this guy really was a big deal, it'd be important to know what i can before i meet him.
"he's pretty intense," hotch admitted,"not much of a bedside manner."
elle chuckled as she set her bag down on her desk,"sound like anyone else we know?"
with her tone of voice, it was clear she was talking about gideon. i set my bag down as well as spencer stared at me uncomfortably.
"what?" i questioned, looking up at him.
he looked at me, treading carefully as he blurted out,"take my sweater."
i knit my eyebrows together and smirked,"but then what would complete your ensemble?"
he sighed, slipping it off,"if max ryan is really intense, then i want you to make a good first impression."
i stared at the sweater, feeling my body flood with warmth. i felt like a middle school girl, fawning over wearing a boy's jacket, but i couldn't help it. in my experience, spencer did not like to share. but he was willing to to save my ass.
"fine." i said definitively, grabbing onto the sweater and slipping it on.
"i heard he was forced to retire." morgan said.
"no, he chose to retire." hotch shook his head.
spencer spoke up, bursting with excitement, "he's written a new book on the keystone killer."
everyone looked over at us, noticing the sweater swap. i shifted uncomfortably, messing with the sleeves.
we walked to the conference room, opening it to reveal gideon and max ryan, who stood at the head of the table. they were so engrossed in a letter on the tv screen, i'm not sure they had even noticed us.
