i stared at my reflection, it looking just about as nervous as me. i adjusted my blazer and checked for lipstick in my teeth. i was coordinating the perfect outfit and makeup that made me look professional. i started at the behavioral analysis unit of the fbi tomorrow. i needed to be ready.
i frowned and shook my head, getting the feeling this outfit just wasn't right. i was going to take it off when my phone rang.
i stared at it for a second, wondering who would be calling at this time of night. it was late enough for me to be weary and that's never good.
against my better judgement, i picked up.
"hello?" i questioned, the number unfamiliar for me.
"delainey harris-tran?" a man, voice deep and commanding, asked.
i bit my lip nervously,"that's my name, but i usually go by laine."
i heard shuffling in the background, like the sound of clothes rubbing together,"aaron hotchner, unit chief of quantico's bau," i felt excitement pulse through me, my first work call had me smile, but it quickly dropped when he explained to nature of the call,"i know you were meant to start tomorrow. we've been given a case tonight. can i expect your presence?"
i was happy to get my chance early, but the circumstance in which my fortune occurred made me immediately feel guilty for the positive feelings,"yes sir."
"agent morgan and i will come pick you up. we have to make a stop and it'd be easier to just pick you up than explain. can you tell me your address?"
i nodded, trying to remember it. i haven't lived here for long, i only moved to take this job. i looked up at the ceiling,"yes, of course. um... 5824," i went blank for a split second before it came to me,"5824 penburry lane."
"we'll be there shortly. bring your go bag." agent hotchner informed me.
"okay, thank-" i was cut off by the dial tone.
i knit my eyebrows together, not sure why he hung up so abruptly, but i brushed it off as i ran for my shoes.
my eyes set on a pair of doc marten shoes. the rest of my shoes were heels or vans, so i figured they would be best. at least for now.
i put them on and sighed, knowing i had just decided this outfit wasn't first impression worthy. but i didn't have time to change. i specifically picked a place close to the headquarters. i pulled my go bag out of the closet and stared at it, ready for whatever was about to be thrown at me.
i walked out of my room and into the living room of the house. i saw my roommate, kyle james and our dog, mrs. rodriguez. kyle and i went to high school together, we had been inseparable since freshman year.
he glanced at me and smiled lightly,"going somewhere?"
i nodded,"first day on the job."
"you mean night," kyle corrected me, before looking down at our french bulldog,"say bye-bye to your mommy. she's gonna go save the world."
i chuckled softly at his hyperbolic speech. it may not have been the world, but it was just as nerve wracking.

during the car ride, i hadn't learned much about hotchner and morgan. they didn't talk about themselves at all, we introduced ourselves, i was handed my badge and gun, and that was that. i had taken the picture a few days ago so it would be there my first day. i guess that was lucky.
they weren't in the business of casual conversation. morgan simply briefed me on the case while we walked through a school campus.
"they're calling him the seattle strangler. four victims in four months. he keeps them alive seven days, before disposing of the body." morgan explained, holding a file in his hands.
