Adhika lifted a hand to turn the doorknob, but ended up bringing it down. She badly wanted to go into the room, but for some inexplicable reason, she could not bring herself to do it. She shook her head and turned to leave, when suddenly, her name was called.
"Adhika?"
She halted in her tracks and turned back around. Her lips spread into closed lip smile, as Mrs. Aneya approached her.
"What are you doing here?" She questioned; anger dripping from her tone.
Adhika was not surprised — in fact, she had expected her reaction to be just that. It was justified after all. "Namaste, auntie."
"I asked you a question." She walked even closer to her, making Adhika intuitively take a step backwards. "Why are you here?"
"Actually...aunt..tie." She stuttered. "I heard what happened to Sameer. I came to pay him a visit."
"You're Aaliyah's friend, aren't you?"
Hesitantly, she nodded.
"I'm sure you were aware of her plans to abandon my son on their wedding day."
"I'm really not lik—"
"Let me speak." She cut her off and pointed an accusative finger at her."If you really are a good person, you should have at least informed Sameer of this. After everything he has been through, he doesn't deserve to have his broken so ruthlessly."
"You have to believe me, auntie. I really was not aware of her plans. Had I known, I would have done everything in my power to stop her. I'm her friend, yes, but that doesn't mean I will trust and support her blindly. What she did was horrible. I never thought she was capable of doing something as heartless as that. I know my apology would probably mean nothing to you, but on Aaliyah's behalf, I will like to apologize to you."
"You don't owe me an apology." Mrs. Aneya gave a small smile. "You know, sincerely speaking, I'm glad the wedding didn't push through."
Adhika ought to have been surprised by her confession, but she already knew Mrs Aneya never liked Aaliyah that much — even she knew. Hearing her say those words audibly, did not come as a surprise to her.
"I just hope Sameer realizes he hasn't lost anything special. The sooner he does, the better it would be."
Lost of words, Adhika hummed in response. "How's...how's he doing?"
"He is recovering. You can go in and see him."
"Thanks, auntie."
She knocked on the door, before pushing it open.
Sameer was lying on the hospital bed; his eyes glued to the ceiling. Obviously, he was lost in a trance.
Adhika swallowed a lump in her throat. It was difficult — very difficult for her to see him in such a condition, because of someone who wasn't her. She knew he loved her best friend — for this single reason, she tried all she could to suppress her feelings for him. She really did, but Aaliyah did not only end up hurting him, but her as well. In spite of knowing she did not have a chance with him, she was happy, because Aaliyah had him and loved him. Why she left so suddenly was still a mystery to her.
