Dear, Sameer,

I'm very sorry I had to leave this way. I didn't want to do this. I didn't want to hurt you, but I had to. I'm not ready to be married and in spite of knowing this, you still insisted we get married against all odds. I couldn't say no to you then, because of the love I have for you, but thinking about it rationally, today, I realized I'd only be cheating and setting myself back. If you're reading this right now, it means I'm already on my way to Paris, but I will surely come back. Wait for me. I love you.

Aaliyah

Sameer crumbled the sheet of paper in his fist and gnashed his teeth;  infuriated. His demeanor contorted in unadulterated pain. Of all days, he couldn't believe the person he loved — the only person he had ever visualized his future with, would ditch him, on their wedding day. He never imagined the day he thought would be his happiest, would turn out to be his worst nightmare. In just a matter of few seconds, he felt his whole world crumbling. He wanted to speak, but could not, as the words formed a lump in his throat.

"Sameer!" His mother, Mrs. Aneya called and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, pulling him out of his trance. "What does the letter say? Where is Aaliyah? Why isn't she here yet?"

"She's gone." He deadpanned; his face void of all emotions. "The wedding has been called off. Please inform the guests." With that said, he turned around and maneuvered out of the hall and towards his car, parked in the lot. His blood boiled as he saw the decorations hanging all over the car. Furiously, he began to pull them out. His breathing emerged in ragged breaths. The thought of being made a laughing stock in front of hundreds exacerbated him. "Argh!" He groaned and began fiercely throwing punches at the body of the car. He did not stop doing that, even when his fists were all swollen and bloodied.

"Sameer!" His best friend, Kabir boomed and rushed towards him. "Calm down, Sameer!"

"I'm calm." He yanked his hand away and opened his car door.

Just as he was about to go in, Kabir  grabbed his arm and turned him around. "Where do you want to go? I will drive."

Sameer gritted his teeth; his hand clenching and unclenching at interval. He was obviously trying to stifle the urge to punch him square on the face and transfer of all his aggressions on him. "Don't you get it? I said I'm calm!" He bellowed and shoved him hard against the chest.

"Sam—"

He got into the car and sped off, before anyone else could stop him.

On the highway, he couldn't stop his tears from falling anymore. He had tried. He really did. A lone tear slipped out of his eye and he furiously wiped it away. The reality was in front of him, but yet, he still could not bring himself to believe she had it in her to cause him so much pain — to betray his love. His mind drifted to the possibility of her being kidnapped and then someone sending him the letter, just so he would hate her. But who would do that? To the best of his knowledge, he knew she had no enemies. Exasperated, he punched the steering wheel and groaned.

Because he was so engrossed in his mini world, he didn't see the jeep in front of him, until he was few inches away from it. As a last resort to save himself and the jeep driver, he turned the wheel and ended up crashing into a roadside tree. His vision instantly became blurry and he slipped into unconsciousness.

"What happened to my son?" Mrs Aneya panicked; tears leaked from her eyes and her whole body trembled.

"Please calm down, auntie." Kabir spoke in a hushed tone.

"I asked you a question!" She snapped.

"He got into an accident, but—"

"Accident?" Her eyes dilated, horrifically. How did that happen?"

"Apparently, he was driving recklessly. His car collided with a tree, but thankfully, he isn't badly hurt. The doctor said he will be alright."

Mrs. Aneya let out a breath. "Where is my son. Can I see him? I want to be with him right now."

"Of course. This way." He led.

Sameer was lost, staring into space, when his mother and friend walked into the room.

"Sameer! Mera beta!" Mrs. Aneya cried and rushed to hug him. "What have you done to yourself, my boy? Aaliyah isn't worth this."

"Please tell me, maa." He averted his gaze to her; fresh tears brimming up in his eyes. "What have I not done for her? I made her quit her dirty jobs. I paid for her studies. I turned a deaf ear on what people were saying about her. I loved her immensely, maa. Is this the reward I get for all of my good deeds?"

"She's an ingrate." Mrs. Aneya seethed.. "So forget all about her now. I never liked her from the beginning anyways, but because you said you loved her, I had no choice, but to respect your decision."

"Auntie is right, Sameer." Kabir chimed in. "She doesn't deserve to be cried upon. I also didn't approve of her in the beginning, you remember that, right? But you claimed she's a changed person and that it's bad to judge people by their past. I won't be surprised if she actually ditched you today for a richer man. Such a gold digger!"

"I hate her." Sameer spoke through gnashed teeth.

"That's natural, son. You may hate her, but in hating her, remember not to hold onto it for too long, for you'll only continue to hurt yourself. I know it'd be hard, but you have to move on.  Aaliyah is now in your past. She has no place in your present anymore, so forget her."

He nodded and closed his eyes. "I want to rest now."

Kabir took the cue he wanted to be alone, so he gestured they leave the room and allow him get the rest he sought.

Immediately Sameer heard the sound of the door being closed, he reopened his eyes. "I'm going to forget you, Aaliyah" He vowed. "But before that, I will have you taste a dose of your own medicine. You will have to pay for the pain and humiliation you caused me today."
