IT WAS LATE afternoon, the sun had gone behind the cloud making the environment look lacklustre. Lily Smith strode happily down the road with her bag bouncing off her back. School was awesome today; the games and sports they had made her lively.
She walked into the compound right in front of her house, she sensed the surrounding—weird silence. She was about to head inside when her mother moved out. Her face showed worry.
"Good afternoon," she greeted with her neck slightly stooped. "What happened?" she examined her face, had a feel with her palm.
"Go inside. Undress your uniform and clean up yourself " she sat on an armless plastic chair that stood outside." Mom, something's wrong"
"I can't welcome you with that, go do that first!" Her voice was a bit high. She stared at her so concerned—she knew if she said further her mother could yell this time.
She walked in meeting her father depressed, but she isn't much close to him. She walked out soon after a very short shower. Now heading to her mother. she didn't meet her right on the chair. She walked up to the backyard. First, she didn't spot her until she was about to leave.
"Your father was robbed" her voice came from behind.
" What?!" Lily wasn't sure if her voice was a yell.
"Your school fees was robbed, all the money he withdrew from the bank--- his phone, his wristwatch---- everything he held with him." It took long before she could comprehend.
In shock, she fell with her buttocks on the bare floor; deeply saddened by those words. She knew her father, even though they weren't close when it comes about her education he doesn't joke.
She schools at one of the best schools in the city but not as Louis Alexander high school the top three best schools in the country. St. John high school was where she attends.
Lily was tall and slender, with large eyes and long eyelashes. Her hair fell in tangled plaits across her shoulder. Her beauty was delicate and mysterious that one would think of a blossoming flower. But she's less intellegent. This is caused by one thing that looked so serious in her life. When she's nervous she turns less intelligent, not able to think fast. Her nervousness is caused in some occasion like; meeting new people, when people seemed to concentrate on her, and a lot of awkward moments.
She'd tried her best to get away with this but it was really so hard to get away with. This made her worry. A lot of motivational books she'd read, they weren't working, trying to be confident and courageous in the midst of people was so difficult.
In most circumstance, when she tries to write up in class works she often forgets answers to questions. This made her less brilliant in class.
But there's something which made her special--can she sing!!. She loves music a lot. She'd great voice made sweet. She plays musical instruments like piano and guitar, this made everybody like her. She had a guitar at home which she rehearses.
Her family, the Smiths, weren't that poor. They were little well off. Mr Smith was a civil servant and was well paid. But according to Louis Alexander high school, they weren't even up to Third class money.
The lowest student that could afford to attend the school would be up to Third class money upwards.
The words: First class, Second class and Third class money were slangs used to rate students wealth.
Third class money worth the rate of fifty million to ninety-nine million nairas. Second class money worth the rate of hundred million to four hundred and ninety-nine million nairas. while First class worth five hundred million upwards.
