"How about these?" I ask, holding up a pair of white combat boots for my best friend Patton to see.
His eyes light up with excitement. "Those look great!" he exclaims, and I smile.
"Be right back, I'm gonna get changed." Patton nods and I slip into my walk-in closet.
Once I finish changing, I give myself a once-over. My burnt sierra hair has been combed back, making my olive green eyes stand out against my tan skin. I have on a red Letterman jacket with white stripes along the collar and edges of the sleeves paired with a white undershirt. my dark red skinny jeans are a stark contrast to the bright white combat boots I just showed Patton. To finish it off, I put on a forest green choker and walk back outside, where Patton is waiting for me.
"You ready?" he asks when he sees me come back.
"Are you sure you wouldn't like to borrow anything from the Princey closet?" I ask for the fifth time that day. Patton sighs.
"Alright, kiddo, but only because you're being so insistent." I squeal in delight and scan what I have, quickly finding a blue crop top with spaghetti straps.
"How's this?" I ask, holding it up so Patton can see. "You could probably wear a pair of jeans and sneakers with it."
"Alright!" Patton says as he takes the top and steps into the closet.
"Patton?" I call after a minute.
"Yeah kiddo?" comes the reply from inside the closet.
"I'm nervous."
"Aw, don't be, you're going to do great!"
"Yeah, but what if someone recognizes me? I am literally one of the most famous teenagers in the country, someone is bound to. I don't want anyone to recognize me, I just want to be normal for once!"
I can hear Patton's reassuring smile, even through the door. "It's going to be okay, kiddo. I'll be right here for you."
"Thanks, Pat."
"Anytime!" Patton replies as he steps out of the closet. The crop top I picked out highlights his sky blue eyes, which are framed by round glasses. His fluffy, light brown hair, the same color as the freckles dusting his cheeks, has a hint of ginger in it. He has on a faded pair of jeans--cuffed, as always--and blue and white sneakers. On his left wrist are two bracelets: one blue and one red. Friendship bracelets. I have a matching pair, but prefer to wear long sleeves, so you can never really see them.
"Aww, you look so cute! Everybody is going to be fawning over you."
"Well, I am quite the deer!" I chuckle.
"Dad jokes. Cmon, we gotta get to school."
"Alright!" Patton skips after me as we walk out, and I'm unable to ignore the growing pit of unease in my stomach.
