Squinting against the bright LED light I could just barely make out a paunchy, nearly bald man. He staggered down the rocks, skidding lightly with every other step. When he finally reached us he was breathing heavily and swearing lightly under his breath. Looking closer, while he caught his breath, he looked to be maybe in his late forties. He had lines around his eyes, most likely from having a life full of laughter, his reddish-brown hair was thin and looked in danger of becoming extinct. He wore overalls with one latch undone. Black clogs peeked out from underneath his trouser legs.

"Whew.. Whater you two doin' out 'ere?" He asked, his southern drawl hitching into an earlier English accent. "This 'ere is pivate pop'try. You don' b'long 'ere." He squinted at us his eyes sizing us up.

"Sorry, sir. We were just enjoying a good night out and saw this beautiful lake's edge." I said.

"No 'arm done. Don' catch many childen out 'ere. Nice night as any to 'ave comp'ny." His deep voice calmed out and his old english accent flowed easier. He seemed to be easing out and ready for a nice chat. " 'Ow come you two aren' out causing trouble? Like mos' teens? Jus' don' like the lookin' of yer folk. Always throwin' rubbish at me and me land. Bloody fools. Got 'nough on my min' to deal wit trouble makers." He paused, puffing on the cigarette he just lit. "Couple o' yer folk came out the ouder night causin a ruckess. Poor old blighter like me can' keep no order ov'r 'ere."

"Couple of our folk? What did the people look like?" I asked curiously.

"Tall gangly boy, black 'air. He wore a cap and spoke in spanish. The ouder was female. Brigh' pink 'air and a large scar runnin' up her arm." He sighed, scratching his head. "I wasn' lookin' fer trouble or nouttin'. They lookin' mean so's I le's 'em go."

I looked at Kida noticing the pale look on her face. She must have recognized the description. I nodded at her, "Know them?" I asked her quietly. She shook her head, her eyes wide.

"Nah don' mader no more. I go's me a nice little friend. He's a beaute ready to take off someone's leg. Police 'as been down 'ere a couple of times and 'elp set up camera's. Waste o' time in my opinion." He scratched his head again. Flicking his cigarette to the side he said,"Wanna come in fer a cuppa tea? Come. I won' take no fer an answer." He smiled at us showing he meant no harm.

"Wow this is a beautiful place." Kida exclaimed. She studied the decorations in the surprisingly warmly lit hallway. It had a tad too much female touch for it to be his idea.

"Thank yah, sugar. Me wife did this 'ere. She loved to decorate. My sweet Mary." He smiled sadly stroking a picture frame before he turned and stalked to the kitchen. I strode up to the picture and saw a beautiful woman smiling serenely at the room. Her hair a lovely brown curled just to the top of her shoulders. a small smatter of freckles sprinkled across her nose. Her eyes a startling grey twinkled with mischief. I heard a call from Steven from the kitchen. Shooting Mary a quick glance I smiled and walked quickly into the kitchen.

Steven was at the stove putting a black kettle on the stove top. His arms bunched up as he grabbed a huge baking dish and carried it to the sink. A small meow sounded near my ankles. Looking down a small kitten blinked slowly up at me. His tail flicked a couple of times. I bent down and scratched his head softly, a purring noise came from him.

"OOOH a kitty!" Kida squealed. She instantly got down on the floor and pulled a string from her pocket. Grinning widely she watched the kitten bat at the string as if it was the best thing since cat food.

"Ha Ha be careful of law'rence. He is a playful devil. You two make yourselves at 'ome. I gotta go check on sometin'." With that he quickly walked out of the kitchen.

"Liam where were you?" My mom asked walking hurriedly from the kitchen. Her wide eyes seemed to assess my skin checking for any injuries.

"Hey mom, sorry for worrying you. I just got sidetracted walking Kida home. Er. may I go to bed?" I asked. Mom studied me slowly then held her arms out in an invitation of ready for a hug. I walked swiftly up to her and hugged her quickly.

"Yes have a good night. Tomorrow we talk about what the doctor told you." She said, determination flashing across her face. Anger shot down my back. Forcing a smile I nodded and swiftly left the kitchen.

In my room I couldn't escape the word of my doctor. My life was about to be disrupted and I couldn't do anything about it. Why is life so unfair? Why couldn't I be normal? Why me?
