Climbing down from the outlook over the forest, Korra and Asami walked together to get back to their camping area. The green eyed girl seemed to have a forlorn expression on her face while walking. The avatar spoke up suddenly, causing Asami to snap back to consciousness.
"I'm going to go look for Iroh one more time, I know he's somewhere in here." Asami nodded and smiled, "Alright. I think I need a little rest, I'll just stay here for a little while."
Korra hugged her then walked over to another passageway, looking over at her friend once more. "You sure you don't want to come with me? I can carry you," she asked and knelt down to look at Asami, showing she was being serious.
"That's sweet of you, Korra. But I think I'll be fine over here," the woman said, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. The avatar stood and nodded in understanding. The raven haired woman smiled and watched her walk away.
"Careful Asami, you might hurt yourself. Let me help you," a soft voice called out, surprising the nonbender. She was sitting cross legged when the voice seemed to appear out thin air.
"Who's there?" Asami turned, checking her surroundings to find the voice. "Korra?" The woman looked around frightened of being alone until she saw a vision appear above her.
"Mother...?" Asami stared in disbelief as the figure in front of her smiled tranquilly. She was looking downward at a small girl, using a hot comb to straighten the small child's thick raven coloured hair.
Asami realized that it was a memory from her childhood when they were getting ready to go with her father to visit a client and their family for a business exchange. She watched the vision play out until she felt a hand on her shoulder, freezing in place.
It was Korra, she had been wandering the other side of the forest trying to find Iroh, only to be brought back to where she was originally with Asami. The water tribe woman turned her friend around to inspect her.
"Asami. Are you alright?" She asked with concern. The taller woman looked at the bender with a confused expression. "Of course, why wouldn't I be?"
"You were staring at that tree for a while now," the avatar said. Asami looked at her blue eyed friend and felt her eyes start to water. "I...I thought I saw my mother. I heard her voice and it sounded so real," she said, sobbing quietly.
"Asami...I knew I should have taken you with me. Come on, we should go back to the lake," Korra says and takes the sobbing woman's hand gently. They walked in silence for a long time until they reached a small tree on the other side of the lake.
"Maybe we should go back to Republic city. It's been a real emotional roller coaster for you here," Korra said softly and sat in front of her friend. "Maybe we should. But I want to come back with you again."
Asami leant onto Korra's shoulder and held her hand. Korra looked down and smiled at her. "You've been really, uh...hands on for the time we've been here." The water tribe girl didn't mind it, she just wasn't used to receiving so much physical interaction with many of her friends besides the occasional hug.
Asami stayed quiet until she smiled and looked away. "I'm sorry. I'm so used to being strictly business ready and professional. It's nice to have a break from it once in a while. Hugs are more sincere than a handshake to me."
Korra nodded and smiled. "I'm not really used to it either but I agree. It shows trust I guess." They looked at eachother and Asami began to drift into a daze, staring longingly at the powerful avatar. Korra looked left and right then gave an awkward smile at her, not sure how to respond to the staring.
"We should go back now. I think we should at least," Korra said, her voice slightly wavering. Asami blinked away her dreamy expression and smiled. "Yeah, we can go back to the estate if you'd like. But I'm sure you'd rather go where you feel more comfortable on air temple island."
"I wouldn't mind going to your place. Besides, you don't have anyone to hang out with besides your butlers and maids," Korra said jokingly. Asami looked down, her expression unreadable. "You wouldn't mind spending time with me..? I thought you would be tired of me by now," she said with a small chuckle.
Korra looked at the green eyed girl and surprise and gently punched her shoulder playfully. "Are you kidding? We spent all this time here and I've never been bored of you." Asami flinched from how hard even Korra's gentlest playful hit was, rubbing the spot. "I think we should go back to the southern water tribe instead of republic city. I want to see the place you're from and learn more about your culture."
The avatar perked up and looked at Asami with bright eyes. "You really want to?" She asked enthusiastically. Asami giggled at the child-like excitement and nodded. "Yeah, I think it would be fun."
"Woohoo! I can't wait to get back, I have so much to show you!" Korra grabbed her friend by the hand and proceeded to hoist her up into her arms. The nonbender gasped and held onto the bender's muscular shoulders. As she ran, Asami seemed to watch Korra's face as she headed for the portal at full speed. The look of confidence and determination on her face made Asami smile.
She finally knew when she would tell Korra how she felt.
