March 25 Afterschool. Car.
My dad picked me up after school.
All of my friends wanted to talk. About my period and it’s effect on the boys I would guess.
But I needed to get home so I told them we would talk later. My dad had a car I’d never seen before, but I didn’t worry about it. It seemed inconsequential.
In the car my dad was acting a little weird. “My Lady, at last. I’m so pleased I found you.”“I got out as soon as I could Dad. Don’t get all passive aggressive. The whole gang wanted me to stop and chat but I couldn’t have been more than five minutes late you can’t have been waiting that long.”
“Much longer than you’d think, my Lady. And besides even a moment away from your presence feels like an eternity.” He said.
“Okay Dad, that was super creepy.” I said, kind of getting a weird feeling from him.
He pulled the car over into the lot at the park. When the car was off he turned toward me in his seat. “My Lady. Do you notice anything different about me?”
“Well Dad, you never referred to me as ‘my Lady’ before.” I said.
“That’s good, very good. Anything else?” He asked.
“Well, it’s unusual that you pulled into the park to talk when we only live three more blocks from here.” I said. I found this surprisingly hard to think about. “And I’ve never seen this car before.”
“Okay, yes. But how about something physical.” He coached.
“Well Dad, you are usually broad and muscley like a bear. Now you look more like a dancer. Your hair is shaved on the sides with long braids on the top instead of a short gray fringe with bald spot in the back. You’re usually fifty, not like twenty five. Oh and you’re usually white.”
I was proud, I felt like I was winning this game. I was especially proud that I noticed being black last. It meant it wasn’t important but I wasn’t one of those people who tried to pretend to not notice someones race, which only marginalized them more. Then it really started to become clear to me what I’d just said. I screamed, then jumped out of the car and ran into the park.
March 25 Aft. Park.
He chased me around begging my forgiveness and asking for a chance to explain.
I finally got tired enough I told him he could explain if he didn’t come any closer.“Certainly, my Lady.” and he sank to his knees there where he stood. “Let’s start with the simplest. Did your parents tell you you were adopted.”
“They never tried to make it a secret. They adopted me at 18 months. So while I don’t remember it now, I was already talking when the memories faded so I expect hiding it was never an option.”
“I brought you to the Mamets. Your mother got a special dispensation and protection for when she was nursing you. But between that time and adulthood you couldn’t be in their realm, it would have greatly endangered you. Plus, they couldn’t accompany you to this plane. So the perfect couple were found and you were entrusted to them. I have waited years for your power to wake and to be called to serve you. I don’t know why it took so long. I would have expected menarche at the latest and you look a bit old for that.”
“If menarche means starting my period, you got it in one.” I said, surprised. “ I do girls rugby, soccer, field hockey, brazillian jiu jitsu and track. I’ve never had a period. My doctor said it’s nothing to worry about. Not that that stopped me from worrying.”
“Okay,” He said, “I guess it’s an age thing. Because normally it would start in bits and bobs but your aura looks fully energized, in fact almost too energized. I guess because it has been brewing inside you and finally came to a head. I know your parents are just as surprised as I am.”
