Chapter 4

"Wait, WHAT?" Annabelle eyes grew even bigger, and she almost toppled over at her realization. A witch! A real live witch! Her Grandma Lilly was a witch! And herself, well, she...couldn't be. That was impossible! How could she?...

"A witch...but, grandma...how come I never knew this? Were you hiding from me, our family? And how come I never knew I was....a, um, witch, too. You know what, this doesn't add up. You, yes, I can see you're a witch. You just proved that, um, right there. Good job. Bravo. But me? Uh-uh. No way. I am not a witch!"

Yet again her grandma stood there and laughed. Why does she keep laughing?! How does discovering something this big about you be the least bit funny? Maybe there were just still some things she didn't quite understand about her.

Thank god she stopped laughing after a few moments! I think it was because she saw my face, how serious I was right now. Even though she stopped laughing, she never stopped smiling.

"My dear Annabelle, I had the same reaction when I was told by my grandmother I was a witch. May I please sit by the log with you again, and maybe make this a bit clearer?"

Anna nodded her head vigorously. "Yes, please!"

And so she sat, and began to explain all of this.

"Well, basically your family on my side is a long line of witches. All of your family on my side is a long line of witches. Most of your ancestors have been either witches or warlocks of the Rose family. But not everyone in the family has been one. You have to require the gene somehow, giving you your magical abilities.

Yes, we can do spells, potions, fly, and many other things. But, the important thing is that we keep it secret. And we have been for centuries. Says so in our spell books and prophecies. I will teach you these things in private lessons we will start shortly. And yes, there are other warlocks and witches out there, too. How are you keeping up so far?"

"Um, pretty good, I guess. I mean, how much do you expect from someone who just learned a life changing secret about themselves they never knew they had?" Anna laughed half-heartedly at herself, but Grandma Lilly just ignored this and continued.

"You also have to know why I knew you acquired the gene that made you a witch. First of all, you're my granddaughter, so I've kept my eye on you to look for symptoms. Your visions see, are signs. Some witches have special talents that came before they are a full-fledged witch. You, my dear, have visions and dreams that mean something. You won't know what they mean right away, but in time you will know.

"Only time will tell how things will become" Anna whipped her head to the Barn Owl on her grandma's shoulder that she completely forgot about that she think...just talked?

She blinked in astonishment. "Ummmm...ok, like that's not weird! Please explain, before I have another mental breakdown!"

Grandmother Lilly pointed to the owl perched on her shoulder. "Oh! Well these are you spirit guides. They are almost like guardian angels for us witches but in animal form. Usually they reflect their person's personality. Their goal in life is one thing and one thing only: to keep their person safe. Basically you die, they die. They are spirit versions of yourself.

And, you already have one." Annabelle gave her a puzzled look. "Wait

What? What are you talking about?"

"That white tiger of yours. The one who whispered your name, no? She is your spirit guide. She will always keep you safe, and you can tell her anything. She is part of you. Accept her and bond with her."

Anna then started looking around the open area, wondering where was her spirit guide?

"If my spirit guide is supposed to always be with me, then where is she now?"

With Grandma Lilly chuckling some more, she just said "Waiting for an introduction, of course!" She then looked out across the lake and called out "Aloo!"

Suddenly there was a shift in the trees on the opposite end of the frozen lake. Then came out the same majestic white tiger that she saw earlier, almost causing her to crash. A whirl of wind and snow blew over the tiger, and then she was gone. The wind blew across the lake towards Anna and her grandmother, and stopped once it reached them. Once Anna blinked her eyes, it was standing right in front of her, with fur as white as snow and eyes as blue as ice.

"Hello Annabelle" she said. She spoke in the most majestic voice she had ever herd! It was motherly but had the authority of a goddess. "I am Aloo, your spirit guide." She the bowed her head, and leaned down with one paw tucked underneath her. "It will be an honor serving you.

Annabelle stared at Aloo in awe. Then grandma beckoned her forwards towards the tiger, and made gestures for her to speak to Aloo. "Um, thank you, Aloo, I'm sure it will be an honor as well to have you as my spirit guide."

Then something odd happened. Aloo responded "Don't worry. We will have many great memorable times together!" but her mouth didn't move.

Instead it was in her head, like earlier today.

"Wao! Wait, so do we have like a psychic connection too? This couldn't possibly get any better!" This was great! Maybe this was would be a turn in her life, a chance to start over, to be happy again! But them Anna got serious, for she realized something that didn't make sense to her.

"...Grandma, this is great and all, having magical powers and a spirit guide form of me, but...what exactly are they protecting me from? Us from? And also, was my father a warlock, and does my mother know about this all?" At this her grandmothers face grew grim, the brightness of her eyes now dulled. She looked like she just aged about 10 more years in her already old life. She was not laughing anymore.

"Sit down here child" she said quietly. Anna obeyed, slowly walking back to the ancient log, Aloo closely behind her. But as she walked, the world grew still. Not a single sound was herd to Anna, not even her own feet walking in the snow. This was what she was afraid of. Something bad to happen, like it always does. She wasn't going to have a better life now, was she?

And so, her grandma spoke "First of all, yes, your father was indeed a warlock. But no, I'm sorry to say your mother doesn't know. I told you Anna, it's a secret you must absolutely keep! Your friends, family, no one! I'm sorry it has to be this way. It wouldn't have to, if it weren't for them. What your spirit guides protect you from.

There are...things out there. Things that could hurt you, and could hurt me. Nasty things, like the stuff you see in the darkest of dark nightmares. Those bad thoughts in the back of your head you forbid yourself to think about. Stuff that can kill you if you don't have protection. Remember those things in your bio class? Stuff like that.

Annabelle began to speak, but her grandma silenced her, "Wait. There is much, much more."
