A peaceful morning before school was abruptly woken up by the sound of Ushijima's voice booming from the living room, all the way down to Tendou's room, "FOUR MONTHS!"
Tendou rubbed the sleep from his eyes. The sun was dimly lighting up his room; he didn't usually wake up this early. He liked to wake up an hour before school, to get as much sleep as possible, but his roommate, Ushijima, liked to have two hours in the morning. He wasn't particularly high-maintenance, he just liked to tend and talk to his plant's during that extra hour. Tendou propped himself up on the bed with one arm and shouted back in a husky morning-voice, "What!?"
Ushijima swung the door to Tendou's room open. He was dressed in his school uniform, and was holding a small plant, "Four months you sat there and watched me water a fake plant!" Tendou started back at his friend in amusement. He had given Ushijima that plant as a gift, and told him the shiny exterior was part of the plant's species. He had forgotten all about it up until now.
The red head stood up from his bed and walked up to his roommate, placing a consoling hand on his shoulder, "I'm sorry for your loss, but how stupid can you be". He left the room in a fit of laughter and headed to the bathroom to shower, leaving a frustrated Ushijima standing in the doorway.
After steaming up the entire bathroom with the heat of his shower, Tendou got dressed in his school uniform and walked over to the kitchen. Ushijima was brewing a pot of coffee and humming softly to himself. Tendou grabbed a bowl and placed it the counter, before opening a cupboard to grab a box of cereal. Ushijima filled himself a mug with the coffee, leaving only a small amount of space for cream.
Tendou opened the fridge door and looked at the milk, and then at the pot of coffee on the counter, "What if I put coffee in my cereal instead of milk? It would halve the amount of time it takes me in the morning to have breakfast".
Ushijima calmly took the coffee pot off the counter and placed it out of Tendou's reach, "What if you didn't?"
Tendou frowned as he grabbed the milk out of the fridge, "You're no fun".
Ushijima's face remained unbothered, "And you're going to have a premature death".
The pair ate breakfast together and talked about assignments they had coming up. They finished off their morning routine by brushing their teeth and packing their bags with lunches Ushijima made them the night before. Tendou walked into his room to grab his phone on the bedside table, and noticed that Ushijima had made his bed while he was in the shower.
He smiled.
The pair headed out, making sure to lock the door of their house behind them. The university they attended was only a short walk away, and both of them liked to enjoy the crisp morning air on their daily walk to school. Breaking the happy silence between them, Ushijima turned his head to look at Tendou, "You know, it takes one bee its whole life to make one teaspoon of honey?"
Tendou was used to his friend's interest in plants and nature, and he learned that Ushijima couldn't really tell if he was listening or not to his plant rants, "Okay, and?"
Ushijima began talking with his hands as he passionately explained his point, "Who am I to take their whole life's work and simply stir it into my tea?"
"So what? What do they use it for?"
"EVERYTHING! They need to feed, they need it for their Queen, they use it for..." Ushijima's voice faded into white noise for Tendou. He watched his friend go on and on about bees, and tried to look like he was paying attention, but his thoughts began dragging him off into disassociation. He found himself lost in his own mind as he analysed his friend's face.
His green hair was a little longer than most, but Ushijima always made sure to go to the hairdressers before it grew down to his eyes. When Tendou claimed that a little hair was nothing to stress over, his roommate stated that it "Didn't cause for optimal efficiency" before quiety adding "for admiring my potted babies" at the end. His hair was styled simply with a side part, but it complimented the strong facial structure he had. Ushijima wasn't a fan of people touching him in general, but Tendou would give up his entire manga collection just to hold that jaw in his hands.
Tendou shook his head. What kind of a thought was that? He asked himself. But he already knew why he wished for moments like those, and he had felt that way for a while. His feelings only intensified when they moved in together for University. Sure, they bunked together in Highschool, but they always had their own homes to go to eventually. Sharing a home was different. You got to see every aspect of a person's life. And Tendou liked what he saw.
He only wished to know whether Ushijima felt the same.
Tendou decided that today was going to be the day he showed Ushijima he loved him. Oh what a fabulous moment it would be to see Ushijima blush. He smiled devilishly at the thought.
Sure, Tendou had been flirty in the past, but he always paired it with a joking tone. Today, he decided he would show Ushijima what a good boyfriend he could really be. He used up the rest of their commute to school to think of romantic gestures he could lure his roommate in with.
