Not my characters, they belong to Leigh Bardugo, only the plot is mine!!!
By the way, I have not clue what I'm doing, also this is written as if Matthias never died because... FEELS! Also also, Inej and kaz are dating, Wylan and Jesper, and Nina and Matthias are too, It's easier than trying to set it up😝

Kaz

I knew Inej was back before her boat even entered the harbor. Ketterdam was full of noisy, loud, over eager people, and everyone knew she was returning two days before her boat was even in sight. How? I have no clue, and I didn't really care. All I cared about was that she was finally home, or at least back in Ketterdam. This place would never be her home, we both knew that, especially since she'd been reunited with her family. With a series of loud, uneven knocking, Nina broke my train of thought.
"Kaz Brekker! Stop counting you kruge and come to the harbor with the rest of us, we want to see Inej the second she's of her boat." I pretended I wasn't in my office, but eventually her obnoxious knocking got to me. I slipped on my gloves and opened the door.
"Nina, love, I swear on my life I will crush every bone in your body if you ever knock that loud on my door again." She rolled her eyes and started to run down the flights of stairs.
"Everyone else is waiting outside, hurry up!" She called over her shoulder. I waited for her to get down a few more stairs, and then hopped on the banister and slid down. Going down all the stairs is a pain, and as much as I hate to admit it, I wanted to see Inej as fast as possible. I got to the end of the stairs and walked outside. Jesper smirked.
"You know, I don't think you've ever gone down the stairs that fast. Are you a little excited to see your girlfriend?" I punched his shoulder.
"Shut up." We walked to harbor just in time to see The Wraith dock. Inej walked off her boat, her raven black hair tied into a loose braid. She saw us and grinned. She ran towards us, hugging the first person she could reach, Nina. The two of them were squealing like the teens they are. Nina giggled.
"Ahhh! I am so happy to see you! It's so boring without you. How was it? Did you catch any bad guys? We missed you! Also," she lowered her voice to a loud whisper, "Kaz is ten times more annoying without you." Inej was laughing, and at the mention of me, she looked up. I winked at her and walked back towards the Slat, knowing she would follow me after saying hello to everyone else.

Inej

Kaz was going to me the death of me. After three months of being on the boat he bought for me, I was finally home, only for him to wink at me and walk back to the slat. I gave Jesper, Wylan, and Matthias a quick hug and started to jog towards Kaz without another word, but, to my surprise, Wylan stopped me. "Gone so soon? Come get waffles with us, it'll be fun." I shook my head.
"Later. I'm fairly certain Kaz would kill me, then kiss me if I don't show up soon." He sighed as I walked away. He went over to Jesper to complain.
"Saints Jes, he's the only one she spends time with when she's back!" Jesper snorted.
"What if you were gone for three months? Who would you spend time with?"
"Well you, I guess."
"I see. And what would you do with me?" I couldn't hear Wylan's response, but Nina was howling with laughter. The crowd was way too big, so I climbed up the nearest building, jumping roof to roof until I was perched on Kaz's open window. He was sitting at his desk doing paperwork, his gloves discarded neatly on his bed. I know he saw me, but I fed the crows before entering his room. Finally, he got up and walked over to me.
"I'm glad your back." He said. I snorted.
"I would've never guessed."
"Hmm. Did you miss me?" I rolled my eyes.
"Really Brekker?" I could go on all day, but all I wanted to do was kiss him till my lips were blue, so I got serious. "Is it a good day, or bad?" He smiled.
"Good." The fact that he smiled told me he wasn't lying. I walked over to him, putting my arms around his neck.
"So I can do this?" He nodded, grabbing my waist. Slowly, I moved my face to his. "This?" Again, he nodded. My chest was against his, and I could feel his heart beat speed up. He obviously was getting impatient, because he let our foreheads touch, not even shuddering. I licked my lips slightly.
"I missed you Inej." Then he filled the gap between us and kissed me.

Kaz

Her lips were soft, and I don't think I'll ever get over that. She spent months on a boat; you'd think the salty air would making them dry. But no, they were just as soft as before she left, and they tasted like saltwater and pineapple chapstick. Much to quickly, we pulled apart. I smiled softly and went back to sit at my desk. "So, how was it?" I asked. She grinned, and began to tell me about all the slaves she rescued. At one point, she got super excited, and started talking with her hands. I was planning on going though paperwork, but I watched her instead. I picked up ever little detail, the way her eyes twinkled when she got to an interesting part in her story, and how the ribbon in her hair came undone, and her long hair seemed to unwrap itself, falling down her back. She stopped her story when she got to her boat docking in Ketterdam.
"-And then Wylan asked me to get waffles with the rest of them, and when I said no, Jes flirted him into absolute silence. Of course, Nina found this hysterical. Speaking of which, we should go see if their still getting waffles." I raised my eyebrows.
"Whatever you want to do." She grinned.
"Ok! Oh, I'm just so happy to be back!" She gave me a kiss on the cheek and skipped down the stairs. Just as she got to the main floor of the slat, she was pinned against the wall by a new dreg. I didn't recognize him, but the name Alex came to mind. Nobody flirts with Inej, mostly because she's terrifying, but also because I was Kaz Brekker, the most feared person in the Barel. I gripped my cane, ready to step in, but she was one step ahead of me. She calmly unhooked the blade in her slipper and kicked his shin, causing him to shriek in pain and release her. She wiped the blood off with the loose fabric of her tunic and continued of her way to the diner. I raised an eyebrow but said nothing. She grabbed my hand and grinned. "Just another day in the Barel!" I shook my head in amazement.
"You are truly ama-" a loud cry echoed from the ally next to us, interrupting my compliment. A little girl, no older than nine, was being cornered by a pickpocket. Inej tackled the man, bringing out Sankta Alina and shoving it between his fourth and fifth rib. His head hit the concrete floor with a thud. She pulled her knife out and checked his pulse. Wiping the sweat off her face, she looked at the little girl.
"Hi! I'm Inej, are you okay?" She asked, her voice two octaves higher. The girl nodded timidly. "What's your name?" Shakily, the little girl answered Inej.
"Evelyn Marie Rosburg, I'm 7, and no, I won't go home, I don't know where I am." I blinked twice. Kids in the Barel don't survive long, unless they know their way around. She obviously did, for the most part. Inej seemed unfazed.
"Wanna get waffles?" The girl nodded. Inej put the girl up on her shoulders, and grabbed me with her free hand. As we walked to the waffle place, I whispered in her ear.
"What are you doing? Who is this kid?" She shrugged.
"Probably a runaway. She can stay in my room till we figure out what to do." What was she thinking? Before I could say anything, the door to the diner opened.

I would write more, because I'm super excited about this, but I'm tired and quarantine has me sluggish. I'll continue soon, maybe after I get some iced tea. Side note, I'm trying to finish before my phone dies so sorry about grammar. Bye!!!

Ps: Mental health check! Just remember, you are loved. I may not know you, but you are needed here, I want you to know that. Drink some water, maybe get some food, and just breath. Love you ❤️
