[ Ray's Perspective ]

For the first time, someone asked why we, but mostly I, went to such lengths just to find Ninelie.

Throughout the search, nobody questioned my desperation. Perhaps it was because everyone knew we owed Ninelie for being able to live in this world—the earth we only knew from books, a world without threats to humans. But now, Ninelie herself questioned it, and I found it quite difficult to answer. I could've simply said that it was because she brought us to the Human World. It wouldn't be fair if we were the only ones here living happily. We had to ensure she was with us too. But that reason might sound too hard to believe for Ninelie, especially when she doesn't remember anything.

Why was I so desperate to find her?

The rhythmic clatter of the train tracks filled the silence as I looked out the window, watching the landscape blur into shades of green and brown. Ninelie sat across from me, her soft hair catching the light, her eyes reflecting curiosity and confusion.

"There's no particular reason," I finally said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I think it was only natural for us to look for you, since you're practically family."

She tilted her head slightly, her long, diamond-white hair cascading over her shoulder, "So you're saying that you'd carry on searching for me even after a decade has passed? Won't you get tired of that?" Her voice was soft, yet there was an edge of skepticism.

I swallowed hard, feeling my throat tighten. "Maybe the others will, but I won't. I'll look for you even until my last breath," I said, my voice firm despite the fluttering nerves in my chest. As soon as the words left my mouth, I felt a pang of regret. I must seem like a creep to her now, I thought, averting my gaze and staring at the floor, my heart pounding in my ears.

The train continued its steady journey, the outside world passing by in a blur. I could feel the awkward tension in the air, as if the very atmosphere had thickened. Then, breaking the silence, her voice came, soft but clear. "That's quite the commitment there," she said.
