These two options consumed Peter's thoughts and he was drowning in a sea of confliction. The very thought of tortuting and killing innocent people nauseated him to the point of vomiting. His mother and little brother were very worried and tried to help but nothing seemed to work. Peter would start, stop and then stare blankly again, lost in his own thoughts. After he finally told them, his mother was at a loss for words. When she finally found her voice, all she managed to say was "I don't know how to help you but I want my son to come home alive" and then she left him to his thoughts once more.
Through the confliction and words uttered by his mother, he had made his decision. He called his mother and brother to his room and said with a shaky tone of voice "I've decided to go to the camps". His mother, Ursula, stared at him blankly and then started balling and collapsed to the floor saying in a frantic voice "Thank you! Thank you! I didn't want you to die meaninglessly but I wanted you to be able to choose". Peter noted the relief in his mother's tone and embraced her.
The next day, he told his Hitler Youth leader of his decision and, soon enough, he was going off to Auschwitz. He didn't know what to expect until he arrived...
