"This is gonna be fine,Nat. " Ali says from behind.
I can't cry. Something slimy seems to stuck in my throat.
"You can still change it. Ellen's your mom's friend,remember?" Niaz says.
"Natasha," Ali holds me tightly.
I breath in and out a couple of times. When I finally become able to breath properly again,I say,"Why did they do this to me?" sobbing.
"It's gonna be alright,Nat. Let's go see Ellen."Alisha says,still holding me tightly.
After a moment of utter silence ,I speak up.
"No,I am going to see her. Alone.You two wait here."
"But-" Alisha tries to protest but I'm already on my heels.
I almost crash with Ellen in the hallway.
"Oh!.There you are. I have something to say to you."
"You are.....Natasha,right?" she asks,dubious.
"Yeah. And I have an appeal to make."
"Which is what?"
"I just saw-you teamed me up with Danny. I need to change my partner."
"Why so?"
"Why you even placed me with him in the first place!" I ask.
"Dear,I didn't do it. Nor any of my colleagues. It was a lottery system ,you know."
Lottery! People repent when they miss one million dollars by a digit in lotteries. My fate is even cracked up than them.
"Whatever. I need to change him."
"You surely remember I said in the announcement that high school student can only be teamed up with high school students,right?"
"Yes. And you can replace him with Niaz. My sister Alisha can teams up with Danny."
"Okay. I can do that."
My heart leaps in joy.
"But-" she began. "In one condition. You have to tell me the exact reason why you want to switch your partner."
"Because I hate him! That's why."
"And why do you hate him exactly?"
"I.....I...." I stammer. What could I possibly tell her? she needs to hear the full story to judge me, which is by the way, I'm not going to share.
She smiles. I swear,she is the queen of devils or the devil herself.
"That doesn't not matter!"I shout.
"He's so gross and disgusting and weird and he is no better than a dung! I hate him! And I don't want to work with him!"
"Well,the reason you stated was not valid enough for us to review your appeal. It's denied."
"What? Whattt!"
"We can't change your partner. I'm sorry,Natasha."
"But I'm your acquaintance ! You are Mom's friend!"
"Look,Natasha." she took a deep breath. "Try to understand.In the history of Community Care,under my directive,nobody ever requested to change their partner. You're the first one I've encountered. And to process your request ,we need to have valid reasons. Like,has he ever harmed you?"
"His very presence harms me."
"This is not an answer Natasha. Tell me,has he ever threatened you?"
