“Any new leads?” Theodore asked as soon as he entered his office that morning. He hasn’t slept well. Thoughts of his mate roamed freely in his mind and kept him up all night. Her screams of pain echoed loudly in his head, making his beast whimper like a tiny kitten.
He was lost. Theodore had no idea what to do anymore. He wanted to push her away, he needed to do it, and yet, the longer he went without having her near, the beast was closer to breaking free. It wanted its mate no matter the consequences.
“No. We could only trace the prisoners back to being rouges, but none of them bear the hunter’s mark.” Corbin, the gamma, answered.
Theodore nodded before saying, “Make sure that everything is ready for tonight, and tighten the security around the border. Not even an ant passes without the guards knowing. I don’t want any mistakes. Understood?”
The gamma bowed his head in agreement and turned to leave the room, but he was halted when Theodore called out, “One more thing,”
Corbin faced his alpha, cocking his head in confusion. “Anything, my king. Tell me.”
“I want extra eyes on princess Adelaide. If a hair on her head is harmed, I will have your lives.” Theodore warned.
He wasn’t doing this for her. He tried to convince himself. It was for his beast.
And yet, despite the words he was desperately trying to persuade himself into believing, he knew it was more than that. His fear of having to lose a mate once again blinded him; especially after last night. Her cries were still echoing in his head hours later, and the moment he left her room, he promised himself that he would never let those wails of agony escape her lips again; not when he can prevent them.
Something changed within him, and he didn’t like it. Theodore wanted her to submit to him, but his beast fought against him. She was his equal, not a common subject. Adelaide was his Luna. He wanted her; and he didn't.
She was their enemy. She was beneath him. He shouldn't want her; but he should. She was his; his mate, his other half. The Goddess destined them to be together despite their differences, but how could he want someone who didn’t belong in their world?
Adelaide knew nothing about them - only what they let her know. She wasn’t aware of their beliefs that are different from their own. She didn’t know their traditions and their ceremonies. Adelaide was as clueless as a tiny pup which hasn’t matured enough to understand.
And even then, the pup is more knowledgeable than her. Theodore thought wryly.

She looked beautiful, Theodore eyed Adelaide as she walked down the steps and towards him. The irony wasn’t lost on him, and yet, he couldn’t stop staring.
Her long white dress clung tight to her upper body and it flowed gently from the waist down. Her arms were bare of cloth, but they were adorned with large golden bracelets. Simple strands of hair crept over her shoulders, and the rest fell in loose waves across her back.
Adelaide looked like the queen she was to be, and Theodore was having a hard time coming to terms with that. His mate was beautiful, and she had brains; something she needed if she wanted to survive in their world.
But, he thought, how can she survive when those hunters managed to kill one of the strongest of their kind?
His father was no weak man. King Maxwell was the strongest man in their land; the strongest and wisest. It was why he was deemed fit to rule the kingdom and be their Alpha King. Just like Theodore currently is.
Neither was granted his position and influence because of his bloodline. They both earned it.
Yet, after that faithful day, and when he buried his son, he wasn’t so sure anymore. He was deceived by the one he considered his world, and he contemplated his position. He didn’t believe that he was fit to be the king anymore, and for months, he was devastated; but seeing the support his people provided, he became stronger.
They didn’t lose their faith in him, and it helped him go on.
Seeing Adelaide in that dress brought back painful memories. Theodore thought back to when Corvina walked down those same steps, dressed in a similar white dress, but thinking back to it, it was the only resemblance between the two women.
Back then, Corvina walked with the assurance and poise of a lycan female in power. Adelaide, however, had a humble smile on her face, and walked with shyness and apprehension towards the man waiting inside the large entrance hall.
The frown on Theodore’s face deepened into a dark scowl, and he cleared his throat harshly, wishing to erase those memories from his head. The startling change in Theodore’s features made Adelaide anxious.
Did she do something wrong? Was it the dress or the jewellery? Or was it just her?
Theodore could read her like an open book, but he didn’t have it in him to ease her fears. It gave him a sick pleasure to watch her uncomfortable, knowing he was the one who caused it. At the same time, he hesitated.
He was sure that it was his beast and the bond forcing him. It was also the lingering smell of the heat she went through last night.
“You look beautiful.” Theodore grumbled.
It was the beast, not him. He tried to convince himself.
Ada looked up from the floor with surprise. He was taken aback himself. Why did he say those words? Stupid!
She shouldn’t have heard them. It would give her fake hope, and he never promised her anything. Theodore didn’t want anything to do with her!
“Thank you.” Her nervous voice sounded.
Damn it! Now isn’t the time to be attracted. It was just the lingering heat, and nothing more. They had to leave before he said something else to regret.
“Let’s go.”
He won’t be made a fool; not again.
