Int. Riverside Prep Cafeteria - later
Juliette Davis is standing at the doors of the loud Riverside Prep cafeteria, holding a plain lunchbox and looking like she wants to disappear. Natasha Kelly is nowhere to be seen.
MarCY CALDER
Hey! New kid! Come here!
Juliette brightens when she hears Marcy Calder calling for her. She clearly doesn't recognize her from the bathroom. Juliette hurries over.
JuLIETTE DAVIS
(shyly)
Hi.
MARCY CALDER
You're new here, right?
JULIETTE DAVIS
Yeah, I'm Juliette. I'm new here.
(blushing)
But you already know that.
MARCY CALDER
Why did you move here?
JULIETTE DAVIS
(more confidently)
I was born here, but my family moved away when I was young. They decided they wanted to come back this year.
MARCY CALDER
(smirking)
How interesting. Well, maybe you should've stayed back because no one-
NoELLE BROWN
No one wants you to feel unwelcome!
Juliette looks between Marcy, who's glaring at Noelle, and Noelle, who's biting her lip and elbowing Marcy.
JuLIETTE DAVIS
What?
NOELLE BROWN
(stuttering)
N-never mind. I just meant that, um, moving to a new place is hard. Yeah, hard! Um, look! There's Natasha Kelly! Isn't she your friend? See? You're fitting in already! Good luck!
Juliette looks bewildered, then shakes her head and heads over to Natasha, who has just entered the cafeteria. Meanwhile, Noelle is in a fight with Marcy.
Marcy CALDER
Thanks a lot, Noelle. I thought you were our friend!
NOELLE BROWN
That was beyond mean Marcy and you know it!
MARCY CALDER
Well you just ruined it for everyone! It was just a joke, right?
Samantha williams
Yeah, Noelle. Way to spoil the fun!
NOELLE BROWN
She's new. Spare her some pain, will you?
CouRTNEY JOHNSTON
(shouting)
Calm down!
Everyone at the table turns to Courtney, who suddenly turns pink.
MarCY CALDER
(snarling)
Seriously?
SaMANTHA WILLIAMS
Yeah, what's that supposed to mean, Johnston?
Courtney flushes pink. She hates being called Johnston.
COURTNEY JOHNSTON
It's just that, well, we're supposed to be like sisters, remember Williams?
(she turns to Noelle)
Noelle, take one for the team, will you?
(she turns back to Marcy and Samantha)
And you two, focus on the annoying kids, not the new girl.
Courtney sits back, satisfied. The girls all roll their eyes.
MarCY CALDER
(sighing)
Fine.
SaMANTHA WILLIAMS
(sighing as well)
Yeah, fine.
NOELLE BROWN
I'm going to go to the library. I have to catch up on some work.
Noelle stands up and leaves the cafeteria. Doors close shut behind her.
