I'm not scared of death

“What the hell were you doing?” he questioned as I sat up.

“T-thank y-you.” I stuttered ignoring his question.

I picked up my headphones and turned to walk across the street.

“Wait were the hell do you think you’re going?” I barely heard him as I started to put my headphones back in.

“Umm, to school?” I said but it sounded more like a question.

“You do realize that you almost died right?”

“Yeah, so?”

He looked confused, like I should have been scared to death. But to be honest I wasn’t a bit scared. I had been so close to death so many times that I wasn’t scared anymore.

“Whatever.” He said and turned away.

I watched as he walked the opposite direction of school. Hmm, bad boy skipping school. So surprising (note the sarcasm).  I looked both ways before crossing the road, and made it to the other side safely.

I hummed to the music blaring in my ears. Almost to the school I slowed down a bit noting that I still had a couple minutes before I had to be there.

If only there was another place I could go. School isn’t too bad but I still get bullied every once in a while. And at home, well let’s just say id rather live at school.

I walked through the front door of the school, and headed for my locker. My school is as cliché as it gets. Old lockers, brick walls, and normal groups you see in the movies or read in books. Me? I’m a nobody. Part of the loner group.

I get my locker just as the warning bell rings and take out the books I need for my next few classes. Slamming the locker shut and twisting the lock so nobody could get in, I turned and practically ran to my first block.

Before I got to my class the bell rang. I cursed under my breath and tried slipping into the class without Mrs. Carty noticing. But of course luck is never on my side.

“Ms. McCarthy glad you could join us. Do you have an excuse for being tardy?” Ms. McCarty asked.

“N-no ma’am.” I stuttered. A couple of the student chuckled at my fearful response.

“Well then I do believe you have detention after school.” She smiled her sickly smile as I paled.

Shit, shit, shit. I cursed at myself. That means an even bigger beating when I get home late.

“Y-yes ma’am” I said sitting at my seat.

I tried to pay attention to the science lecture that she was giving us but eventually I drifted into my thoughts. Half way through the class the door slammed open reveling the one and only Jack Colton.

“Mr. Colton seems surprising you decided to join my class today.” Mrs. McCarty said.

“Yeah well it wasn’t for your lecture, that’s for sure.” He said as a couple people chuckled at his response.

“Hmm, well it seems that someone has occupied your usual seat I think I’ll sit you by…” she looked around for an open seat. I looked next to me and saw an open seat. Please not by me. Please not by me. I prayed.

“Ms. McCarthy.”

No. I opened my eyes to see that I was the center of attention. I looked at jack and watched him stride towards me. He sat down by me, and looked over.

“Hello again sweetheart.” He said.
