chapter seventeen

Nathaniel push down the latch on his wrisk and adjusted his tie, took up one paper off the dresser top, with in the next hour he was meeting with his lawyer since he had retire from the military at a young age and retired with no business plan he was thinking of conducting his own camp where he could conduct cadets and teaches boys scouts he didn't have another business plan for himself now apart from the one left to him by his father, the inn he can't manage to run the inn but since Tiana was home he was hoping to have the empty building around the front of there  refurbished into a antique store that could help her from sitting around all day feeling restless, he was to meet the contractor depends on what time the meeting end with his lawyer he'll swing by and see him afterwards, he came down to find Tiana with the children waiting, Tiana could tell from his appearance he was going out,
"I have a meeting to attend so your mom will see you off to school" he said
"mom can't drive us" Niccane said
He was expecting that it was why he call for someone to drive them, the car blow in the drive way and Nathaniel smile, "that's your ride well let's go" he call out to Maria, " we'll go out for some time" he said
"Yes Mr Archibald" she said coming out the kitchen she bid the kids goodbye,
"I won't be very long Maria"
"Ok ma'am" she said
Tiana wondered if Maria was at her age it didn't show much for she was short almost the size of Rihanna who was a bout three feet three inches tall, other wise you could tell she's in her late forties, early fifties, they got to the front porch and the man got out
"Richard" Nathaniel greet the man,
"Nathaniel, my boy" he said embracing Nathaniel, "It's really good to see you man!"
Nathaniel nod smile at the man as he Patt his shoulders, "these two are Niccane and Rihanna he pointed from the boy to the girl, "and she is their mom" he said
"She's pretty" Richard whispered with the believe that Tiana wouldn't hear,
"Who Rihanna?"
"The mother"
"And you think I haven't known that" Nathaniel said they both giggle, Nathaniel got in his car back out it's parking space, "swing by later on I have a proposal for you, and hey don't try anything funny!" he said before blowing the horn and drove away,
He smile he too got in and  drove off after he did Tiana could see his car turning left once they reached the Colorado springs welcome sigh,
They got to school just as they did Tiana saw clovers car they run to hug each other as if it's been such a long time, they went in with the children while Tiana went to talk with the children's teacher clover wait for her to return,
"I hope you're not in a hurry" tiana said to Richard,
"no I'm not in a hurry" he said
Tiana and clover get to chat for some time, talk about Aran, themselves and Nate clover was glad she was ok in spite of Nate being a little upset that was the least she say it as she think it, Nate being upset results in him being silent while her husband would show is in wrath that would result in him beating her,
They walk back to the carbide good bye then left he drove her back to the house,
"Did Nathaniel say that you are to get the children?" She ask
"no mam he didn't but if anything such as that he'll call me"
"ok " Tiana said seeing him off,
She went in side, " Maria" she call it sounds as if she was in a room when she answered Tiana look up and see her coming out from a door half way up the steps Tiana didn't notice a door anywhere up there,
"I'm sorry I was just saying I'm back"
"Yes should I fix anything for you?"
"No Maria I'm sure I can manage"
"Ok ma'am"She smile going back in the room closing the door, Tiana went to the kitchen fix some macaroni and cheese and went out to the patio she later took a swing on the children's swing  she wait till five before she starts looking out for the children who came with Nate at five thirty,
"There's homework?" Tiana ask
"No mom"they answer, "going to change" Rihanna said, running up the stairs with her brother behind her, Nathaniel took the corner of the wooden staircase Tiana didn't know leads to some where she came and saw a double door close behind him, the children came hastily down the steps, "Mr Nate" they call,
"He went that way" Tiana told them showing them around the corner of the stairs, it seems they knew where for they ran off with no further questions,
she went to the kitchen, "Maria" she called as she walk in
"Yes ma'am" Maria answer
"Need any help in here?"
"Oh ma'am I would be glad I am trying to fix some mash potatoes"
"I'll do it for you"
"thank you" Tiana took down a apron from the cupboard to wear fixing back her hair she wash her hand before starting to peal and cut the potatoes for washing, she start the stove putting the water for boil, after it starts to boil she add salt to it, then allow the potatoes to boil while they do so she made some corn gravy,
They finish fix dinner and Maria went to get Nathaniel and the children, while Tiana set the table, they were seated at the table when the door bell rang,
Maria went to get it, "Mr Archibald, Mr Richard is here" she said, Richard walk in the kitchen and Nathaniel stood to greet him shaking his hand, "thank you Maria" he said to the older woman, "hey have a seat" he told Richard, "have you eaten?" He ask
"Not yet, the wife is out of town so you know the usual" Richard said
Nathaniel nod with a laugh Tiana got up to serve him then sat back down, they have a little lest quiet meal since Richard engaged Nathaniel in small talks, he nod to him mostly, "we can talk after" he said Richard seems to understand and went into eating complement the pasta a lot talking how good the gravy tasted,
"You got a helper that knows her way around the kitchen"
"I know Maria can cook I've been eating her meals for years, but, but I'm sure she didn't" he said with a pause, "Maria" he call and she came running to the kitchen, "Maria my friend here wants to complement you and the meal he thinks it's the best tasting pasta he has"
"it's really tasty Mr Archibald, but Mr Richard the ma'am was the one who help me in the kitchen today" Maria said with a smile as she look over at Tiana she saw both men look at her as she shyly hang her head,
"Maria have you eaten?" Nathaniel ask
"Yes Mr Archibald I already have something"
Nathaniel nod her off Richard nod and widened his eyes at him,
They finish dinner and Nathaniel got up calling Richard off, "I'll be talking  for some time, you kids carry-on right" he said
Tiana look up at him, seeing how easy it was to ignore her, she finish cleaning up the table and Tiana does the dishes while the children ran off to watch family time, Nathaniel finish talking to Richard on his way out he ask him to say goodnight to his lady he said he would he close the door behind him and went to join the two children, he didn't bother to tell Tiana Richard said goodnight from he came with out him she figured he left, when the show finish Tiana let the children get ready for bed read for them tucked them in see them off sleeping before she went back down Nathaniel wasn't inside but Maria was in the kitchen locking up, "thank you ma'am for doing the dishes"
"It's ok I can help with the work around the house if you let me, it's no problem"
Maria smile nod to her they walk together into the living room Maria took the stairs up to her room and Tiana went out for air.
Tiana heard the car in the driveway while the children were almost ready to left the house for school, she went to the door to see it was Richard, she came out giving him a warm smile,
"Hey" he said
"Hi how are you?" Tiana ask she wondered if he was here to drop the children to school she haven't heard him mention to them or May be he did, not every thing he mentioned to them she knows,
"You left in a hurry the other night I figured you didn't say goodnight"
" I told him" he said pointing at Nathaniel who side look tiana and walk away "he said he would tell you"
"Oh" Tiana said "You came here to drop the children off?"
"Actually I have other engagement" he said
Tiana wondered what it was what business did he and Nathaniel talk about in the night that brought him here so early since it wasn't to drop the children off to school,
He got in his car with the children and drove away,
Richard was left with tiana, "are you going to come inside?"
"Actually it's something to be done on the out side"
"oh" Tiana said puzzled,
"you see Nathaniel want me to teach you how to drive"
"Really you're going to teach me how to?" She sounded excited for she always wanted to learn how to drive,
"Richard nod with a smile, "It's I'll be back" she told him she went in and change into comfortable clothing and sneakers took up her bag call out to Maria she was going to be out",
She got in the car next to Richard who drove them to the empty lot eight miles from home,
Tiana was super excited for she was getting to learn how to drive the first day started off with challenges which she over come by day three things got better, Friday was the game both Rihanna and Niccane were playing in the little league, Tiana thought once Nathaniel drop the children he wouldn't come back but he was home when she got back from her driver's lesson since he was dress she figured his wait on the sofa was for her, she took a quick shower got dress and came down, "Maria" she called and she came from the kitchen, "oh I'm going to be gone for some time, the children have a came this afternoon, normally after each game they treated them, so I figured that you don't have to do much preparation of food for them I'm thinking something more like a snack"
"I could bake a small pineapple cake" Maria said
"That could work thank you Maria"
"You're welcome ma'am, good luck to the kids" she said,
Tiana smile with a nod,
Once she was done talking to Maria Nathaniel got up from the sofa leading out the door he was seated when Tiana got in besides him he starts the car Tiana held her head straight a head avoid looking at him, she was glad when she got to the parking lot and see clover waiting "I save your seat" she said hugging her "hey Nate how you been?" She ask
"Not half as good as you" he said smiling,
"Staying for the game?" She asked "The game is about to start"
"I'll come shortly" he said
"Ok" clover said leaving him
She and tiana walk away arms in arms, Nathaniel wonder if he was seeing right it seems to him Tiana has grown a bit of ass thinking maybe it's because he haven't touch her so long,
"Don't look back but he's watching" clover said with a giggle,
"have he move off as yet?" Tiana ask
"Mm mh" clover said
"He might not come"
"Why?"
"He's not cut out for this kinda stuff, he's a Mr monk kind of guy I'm telling you he's more for peace and quiet"
They both giggle childishly
"He'll come trust me" clover said when she was done giggling,
They got to the bench and Tiana hug Lia and the oth children hugging her husband as well she sat next to the children she look over and saw Niccane and Rihanna they were on the front bench down Tiana called out in a low tone to her daughter her son saw her waving to her grinning, Tiana look for Nate through the gate and didn't see him and the game was about to start,
"Relax" clover told her gripping her arm across her children,
A man came up to Tiana inquiring about the seat next to her,
"I'm afraid that it's already taken" Nathaniel said clover giggle as he sat next to Tiana leaning across to greet Clover's husband and children, he hand her a case of snow cones for the children and a beer for her man fruit juice for her and Tiana,
"Thanks" clover said urging the children to say thanks too,
"Kool man" her husband said holding up the beer bottle to Nathaniel,
Tiana remember Sophia and Rosa had said they will be at the game she didn't know why she didn't look for them at the gate, she wondered if Nate seen them she knew he won't tell her anyway,
Soccer wasn't really one of Nathaniel's favorite sport but he show up to support two children who's now part of him now, niccane who plays the game and Rihanna who cheerleads the game the game got off to a good start he saw the boy getting it on out there on the field, he sat forward to watch the game keeping eyes on Rihanna as much as she held to lead the cheer team but he remains quiet that was up until Niccane got in his best control having the ball making the shots, he couldn't help himself and stand up, "yes!" Tiana look up at him, he ignores her eyes "yes he said once more, laughing at the tricks they pulled off, the game went into a ten point lead at the end of the sixty minutes and Nathaniel was proud of the boy , he hugged them both and giggle when he meet them after the game, "great game man" he said rubbing Niccane's head, "you too, you did great" he told Rihanna hugging her to his side,"my mom and Rosa is here" he said pointing to them the two children ran to them hugging on them,
Clover could see the happiness on the children in spite of the silent between Nate and Tiana she could tell she's happy too, hoping they resolve it soon,
Tiana introduce clover and her family to Rosa and Sophia they shook hand,
while they gather for refreshments clover and Tiana got their space and they talk like they always does they always has a lot to say it became more since they weren't as close as before, they gather once more as they were getting ready to leave,
"Nate" avoid said and they all face the direction, clover roll her eyes on seeing Cecilia she came facing everyone "I thought I would never see you again what you doing back this side of town?"
"you heard there's a warrant out for me in this side of town, oh maybe it was a missing report, what you want"
"I can't say hi?"
"you can but say it to someone who care to have it"
"we use to be friends"
"I chose my friends they don't choose me it's why I make so much right choices"
"i only want to tell you that I heard Timmy Aran and the others looking for you"
Nathaniel laugh, "you're a betrayer who are you Delilah?" He ask, "you just tell them I'm look for them too and I'll come find them save them the trouble to come find me" he turn to face the kids "who's ready to go home?" He ask
"Me the children said he said goodbye walking away the children said goodbye too running after him, he was seated in his car with the children when Cecilia walk away, Sophia look but she didn't ask who she was already she was in trouble with her son for talking too much, she and Rosa said goodbye and walk with clover husband and children to the parking lot leaving clover and tiana to talk, from the rearview mirror Nathaniel watch Tiana with clover she seems really sexy and beautiful and to believe he haven't love her in such a long time, she finally said goodbye going to separate direction, Nathaniel watch her to the car until when she got in next to him, she smile at the children on the back seat, looking at Nathaniel when he started driving, what was the quietest time the children were, Tiana and Nathaniel believe them to be exhausted,
Maria met them in the living room greeting them with a smile "how was the game?" She questions
"We won" Rihanna said
"It was awesome you should have seen how well we played" Niccane said excitingly,
"oh congratulations, I have some cake prepare for you when you're ready"
"ok thanks miss Maria" they said she got fresh and have some cake and chocolate milk, they watch TV together then they were send off to bed, Nathaniel offer to tucked them in they hug their mother she kiss them goodnight sat back down while they went up with Nathaniel, she sat watching some television Nathaniel came back sitting at the far end off her, reaching for the remote he change the channel, flipping through a number of channels before he stuck it on the weather channel, Tiana got up and took the stairs he watch her up before turning back to the TV as he got comfy on the sofa and ended up sleeping there, Tiana got up early because he wasn't next to her as always she went down to find him on the sofa, she fix herself some tea them make some oat cereal and tuna sandwiches she sat at the table with her tea and two sandwiches, Nathaniel woke up got fresh then went to the kitchen, the scent of freshly boil oat cereal fill the kitchen and he saw Tiana at the table, he open the pot on the stove to pull in the scent it's been so long since he had himself a cup of oat cereal he help himself to a large bowl and sat at the table to fill himself, he for got Tiana knows her way around the kitchen she wasn't the woman he married she didn't know how to cook but Tiana has lots of experience in the kitchen, in bed with the children, the children came in just a head of maria, both hugging Tiana and Nathaniel,
"Aren't you two tired?" Nathaniel asked as they sit down,
"And hungry" Niccane complain
"Good morning" Maria greet Tiana and Nathaniel
"Good morning Maria" they both answer,
"I'll serve the kids breakfast, Mr Archibald, ma'am" she said
"Thank you Maria" they both said,
"I'll do the dishes" Rihanna said
"It's ok miss Rihanna I'll do the dishes" Maria said as she brought over their meal,
"She'll manage she learn to do dishes back home" Tiana told her, "besides their bones are very young and we should use them up while they're still young , these generation once they got older you can't get them to work"
Maria laugh
"I thought you were tired" Nathaniel said to Rihanna
" I guess so but as long as I'm promised that I can stay the whole day by the pool"
"yes I have no problem use the pool, I'm going out for some time I have to meet someone" he said as he got up from the table taking his dish "so you'll wash my dish too, thank you" he said bending to kiss her cheek ruffle Niccane's hair then left it wasn't long after the truck was leaving the drive way,
Since tiana got here she haven't took a swim in the pool or soaked herself in the Jacuzzi, now that the children were going to be spending time at the pool she thought why not, after the dishes were done they went to the pool Tiana took a swim with Niccane while Rihanna lay on the pool chair and read, half the day was spent there Tiana was surprised when Maria brought out lunch, after eating Tiana lay on the chair stretch out her body, it felt she haven't relax in a long while then it felt the more she relaxes the more her muscles ache but the sun felt nice on her skin, and she soak in it, the day went with them there after reading was over Rihanna decided to swim she did so for no more than half hour before getting out the pool she then went to the house she was in the kitchen with Maria when Tiana came in with Niccane, they too took a shower and change Tiana was on the stairs when she heard Nathaniel talking to the children it was so she knew Niccane had gotten out his room, they met on the stairs on her way down pausing in front each other, they try shifting to make way and shift to the same side Tiana turn sideways and let him pass before walking down, he watch her went down thinking how sexy she look something changes but he didn't quite know what, Tiana look up once she was on the last of the stairs and saw him looking at her he walk away when she saw him,
Dinner had never seen Nathaniel so silent most of it he sat watching Tiana, each time she look he turn away, Tiana wondered what fault he had found with the turkey legs Maria had cooked down in curry sauce he hadn't eaten more than a smile bite but has eaten the rice and beans off the plate a long with the vegetables, when he didn't finish Tiana took the rest never mind him looking at her, she got finish with it drink some carrot juice then got up to clean the table, before washing the dishes it was Saturday night, no family time, but they watch some good family movies before the children went to bed while Tiana read Nathaniel pause by the door, they were all in Niccane's room, when Niccane falls a sleep he throw Tiana over his shoulder bringing her to her room, he lay her in bed tickling her making her giggle he pull up the covers up to her head cover it and left it there, "is it dark under there?" He ask
"Not yet"
"You know what happens when it gets dark under there?"
" No!"
"Paps use to say that's when the monsters came you go to sleep now and when the monsters come they'll find you a sleep" he told her Rihanna grin, Nathaniel reach over to turn the lights out making creepy sounds as he left the room, "I'm not scared" Rihanna said
"We'll see about that" he walk out a head of Tiana as she pull the door behind her, she walk behind him to their room, she entered the room after him and he close the door, Tiana thought this was it tonight they were going to love each other she feels for him really did she saw him went to the bathroom he was in for a while when she got inside he was shaving Tiana thought he had already used the shower and think to take hers now, she barely step in when he did they ended up sharing the shower much as she made body contact he ignores it then left her there he was gone from the room when she got from there, she went down stairs he wasn't in the living room, she went around the staircase to the door she saw him the other evening it was half open she peek in and saw it was a bar he was sitting around a counter drinking from a bottle he was sitting facing the mirror Tiana didn't want him seeing her so she move and went to the kitchen, her body felt so weird like it belongs to someone else she haven't been working hard but her muscles aches she has some cold ice tea, it was idea it was too cold or she was having it too late her entire mouth became cramp her teeth felt like her they all were decaying, she know she haven't visited the dentist in a time but it hasn't been that long since she visit one, she thought brushing would make it better but it seems to gotten worst, she got up in the morning and they seemed to be the same, she found while having breakfast it was hard to threw her food, she clenched her teeth and sharp pain creeps over the tip of her teeth,
"You ok mom?" Niccane ask
"Yes baby" she said but she got up from the table, most of the morning she stay looking in the mirror looking for tooth decay she couldn't identify a spot that could say she was having a decay, she skip dinner for two reasons she wasn't feeling hungry and her mouth was bothering her, it was becoming real annoying the way it was, she and Nathaniel share the shower later after the children were off to bed, she was brushing her teeth brushed twice wash with baking soda warm water even with the use of Listerine nothing Changes, Nathaniel watch her thinking she was behaving strange, she was in the mirror in the morning when he got up to take a pee what ever she was doing he became of more interested for she stop to watch him he came to the side wash his hand then climb back in bed the children got ready for school and came for breakfast Nathaniel came through the door smiling on the children,
"Did you sleep well?" He ask pulling back Rihanna's cheek
"I told you I'm not scared" Rihanna said with a smile,
Nathaniel nod seeing she really wasn't or she was brave enough to fight it, "anyway we should get going to school right"
"Right" they both said getting up from the table, Tiana got up and follow them out just as they got out Richard pulled up,
"Richard you came?" Tiana ask Nathaniel look at her then to Richard who grin at her,
"You here so early?" Nathaniel ask
"I've got an appointment me and miss t" Richard told him, "miss t I hope you're not busy" he said
"Not at all" Tiana said
"we got a little test run and a visit to the tax office"
"Ok, I'll go get my bag I have a favor to"
"anything"
Nathaniel stood up and look at her walking into the house and to Richard he widened his eyes shook his head "don't play with fire" he warn,
"Hey what you saying?" Richard smile
Nathaniel got in the car just as Tiana got back out the house, he could see Richard car behind him when he was taking the turn, he drop the children off went back to the house, he was there in the afternoon when he heard Tiana call Maria saying she was home,
"Do you need me ma'am?" Maria ask
"No not right now" she said Nathaniel didn't think of going out he sat in the bar he thought Richard would have just drop her off then leave, but from the bar he could hear his laughter echoing he got up and went to the kitchen to find them he clean his throat on entering the kitchen Richard turn and smile at him,
"You didn't leave?"
"We're just celebrating, ah Tiana got her license she did pretty good on the test"
Nathaniel turn and look at Tiana, "thanks Richard I'll see you"
"Take care see you"
She walk away leaving the kitchen but she didn't leave the doorway,
"What game are you playing? You better not mess with my woman"
"Richard laugh you don't have to worry she's ok"
"I'm not worried about her I'm about you you pretend to be sharp and everything, but before you do nothing stupid I was train to kill I'll kill you if you mess with my woman"
Richard laugh rub his shoulder "we're cool you know it and I know it, so what happened between you two I noticed the cold shoulders, the other day I left told you to say goodnight to her you said you would, she said you didn't"
"it's a long story"
"tell me about it"
"when we kinda kick things off she asked about my wife I just refuse to talk about it then my mother told her the whole story and she's saying sorry in a pitiful way I don't want what we have to be on pity"
"that's the least she loves you she's going to feel pity for you some women don't give a shit what you go through in life as long as they got it there way man I know you are tough but you ain't made of steel"
"I know man, I know I'm not made of steel but"
"But nothing work it through" he said getting up, "in case you need me you know my number"
"Thanks man I appreciate you getting it done for me and I'll call you"
They were silent then Tiana move away from the door she was at the top of the stairs when they come in the living room she saw them share a hug then Nathaniel walk him to the front door she was in the room when he came in he took a key from the chest of drawers with a box lay them on her lap Tiana look up at him, but didn't say nothing he walk out, she make herself comfy and open the box it was a cellphone one similar to his Android phone only this has pink colour she squeeze the back that sink in when her finger touch it and it lights up saying welcome, it came with a charger and another cord that looks like the charger only much shorter and has a nother thing shape like a phone but it only lights to once side of the top, she didn't know much about these new technology but rihanna will always look at it when she's home, she puts it back in the box and into the closet amongst her things, when Rihanna got home Tiana let her look at it for her, Tiana set it up and clover was the first person she save and call,
"Welcome to the world of technology" clover said and they laugh, it means they can talk anytime they want,
Wednesday Tiana took her first ride by herself slowly driving down Colorado springs avenue she had filled a dental appointment since Monday the dentist said he could see her today, she remembered well where he had taken them but driving for the first on her own was a bit a challenge, but after asking she got there successfully,
"I don't see nothing wrong here miss stone it's like you got the perfect sets of teeth I've yet to see"
"then what is it?"
"it's difficult to say but I can recommend you to see the doctor"
"Doctor! But why"
"For a pregnancy test"
Tiana mouth open wide but she couldn't speak,
The dentist smile "yes miss stone in your first few weeks of pregnancy it can cause tooth to be come sensitive" he wrote on a note pad and hand it to her, giving her direction Tiana thank him, "you can always come in and see me in case you need to miss stone wish you luck"
"Thanks" Tiana said and walk out of the office, she walk to the vehicle barely making it she got in and sat down awhile before starting it up, it wasn't a long ride depends on the way she was driving, she got up to the sixth floor and ask for doctor Andrews the assistant told him and he send for her right away Tiana became nervous as she sat in the office he ask of her feelings a part from horny and wanting her man she feel fine, that other from the teeth thing, the  test her pressure and took a sample of her blood he let her get naked behind the screen in order to test her he squeeze her tummy and ask if it hurts, it did hurt since he was squeezing it like he was, she nod, he point to a number chart on the the wall telling her to chose a number to tell how hard her pain was when he squeeze into it, "three" Tiana clenched,
"Three?" He ask
She nod, he feel her breast making them tender, he insert his finger inside of her making her tickle, she thought about Nathaniel and how long they haven't done it, they haven't had sex in weeks she was feeling for him more now that she was before, she sat up doctor let her dress while he wash his hand they went back to his desk both sitting down, he let her fill out a form leaving a contact number, since she didn't yet know the cellphone number she leave the number for home,
"I'll call you once the results or back" doctor told her,
"Tiana nod,
"For now avoid cold things"
Tiana nod she got up thanking him, she close the door behind her walking to the elevator a man saw her coming and held it for her, "thank you" she said
"You're welcome the man said the hoarseness in his voice make her look up he smile at her she smile back they got out at the bottom walking to the door together he held the door open for her giving another sharp smile, the got to the parking lot and he walk to a lady pregnant and a child at her feet, Tiana watch them as she hug him and he rub at her tummy before opening the car door, they drove off as he drove by her he blew his horn, Tiana wave and saw the lady and the child wave too,she got back in her vehicle and sat there a while thinking, she thought about what the dentist said about the possibility of her being pregnant, wondering what on God's earth will she do now pregnant and what if Nate doesn't want her pregnant she's still married for God's sake how can she face Aran to ask for a divorce, what will her children think now, she start the Jeep taking her time to turn out the space she was in driving slowly back to the house,
Nathaniel got back and notice the Jeep wasn't there in it's parking space he got to the inside "maria" he call once he was in the kitchen,
" Mr Archibald the ma'am went out I was expecting her to be back already"
