The elevator arrived at the top floor after a long while with a plesant ding and the doors sliding open, thankful to finally be on solid ground i stepped out of the elevator behind Perseus, his large body blocking the room from view. once he had stepped aside I was met with a group of 4 faces, my hand immediately flew to the pocket I had stored my shiv in and Fenrir growled threteningy at the strangers, Perseus told me "Don't worry, the authorities dont know about this place, everyone here is immune, you're safe call off the dog, we won't hurt you" I looked at him sceptically, deciding that I was out numbered 5 to 2 and that I should maybe act civilised I calmed Fenrir and removed my hand from the shiv. "She's a little jumpy" he explained to the group and I glared at him for using such a childish term, which he promptly ignored.
A pale skinned woman, with a rather small frame, a faded pair of blue jeans and what had used to be white t shirt, that was now stained brown, green and in a few places red, stepped foreward and said "we understand" to Perseus then directed her bright green eyes to my ocean blue ones and said "welcome, Athena smith, to our gr-" I cut her off there shouting "don't call me that name!" she looked at me confused "what name?" she asked "Smith" I said decisively "smith is my father's name, if you must refer to me just call me Athena, I want nothing more to do with that pig! and how do you even know my name?" she looked slightly taken aback at this before she said "we know the names of all the immune, that way we can find them and invite them into our community." her answer left a little for me to still question but then I saw a rather large computer set up with a boy around my age working away at it, he seemed to be hacking something and the police had known about me, surely i was on some sort of database.
The woman restarted her speech "Welcome, Athena, to our group, here we give the immunes a place to live other than the streets, we hope you'll choose to stay with us, however you are free to leave whenever you please, we can treat any wounds or infections you have sustained whilst running from the authorities and you may stay here for the rest of your days, same goes for your dog." she seemed rather nice and the offer was rather appealing but i still didn't trust her so i told her "give me a reason to trust you" so she shooed the others away leading me down a corridor to another room, it was a library, full of history books, she picked a book off of a shelf and beckoned me over to a group of beanbags near the windows, I hesitantly sat down next to her as she thumbed through a book and finally found her page, handing me the book I began to read.
'By the end of the year 2020 the world had begun to grow unstable, as the economy dropped so did moods, more people began committing suicide, leading to the year 2021 being known as The Year Of Death, so, governments came up with a plan, they'd release a gas that was diffused into the air to regulate people's emotions, it was a noble idea, until production of the gas began, they figured that if they had the power to regulate emotions they could, by extension, remove whole parts of society, so they started with noble acts, like removing racism (the discrimination against a people based upon skin colour and heritage) and sexism (the discrimination against a people based upon gender) then they became drunk with power and began removing parts of society that had made up huge portions of history, they removed all religions other than their own, twisted form of Christianity, they removed the whole LGBTQ+ community, leaving the entire population to be cishet and, in order to completely discard these parts of human history they removed all lessons and days dedicated to these issues of life. they removed things like the suffragette movement, Black Lives Matter protests and the Pulse nightclub shooting from school curriculums, burned all books and deleted all internet articles pertaining to them and abolished National Women's Day, the entirety of Pride Month and many other parts of life that celebrated these parts of history.'
after I had finished reading the page she turned the book to the last page that simply read 'a piece of technology that cannot be disclosed has been placed upon this book, if you are able to touch it you are an enemy of the government, stay safe, and stay educated.' I, knowing that Fenrir was not an enemy of the government, in any kind of records anyway, pushed the book on the ground to his paw, as soon as the book got within a centimetre of Fenrir the book repelled itself from him so forcefully it slammed into the wall on the other side of the room with a loud thud. I looked at the girl wide eyed as she giggled and went to retrieve the book, the giggle calmed me down, knowing that no one who thought they were in any danger would be so careless, especially after Fenrir and my display as we exited the elevator.
she came back with the book in hand and asked "do you trust me yet?" I thought for a second before saying "not completely, but I have a way you can earn my trust" she perked up at this and asked "what can I do?" I simply looked at her and said "My judge of character isn't all that great, but Fenrir here" I motioned to my dog who was lying at my feet "Is excellent at it, his judgement has gotten me out of quite a few scrapes." she was looking very intrigued now "let him sniff your hand, he won't hurt you weather you're trustworthy or not." she immediately put her hand at Fenrir's nose, showing her confidence in her trustworthiness and her trust of both myself and Fenrir, he sniffed for a second then liked her hand affectionately, nuzzling at her palm like he does with me when he wants pats. I smiled at her and said "ok, I trust you if Fenrir does, his judgment hasn't failed me yet" she smiled and continued to give him a clap, we sat in silence for a while before she said "so your names are Athena and Fenrir" I nodded at her statement to show she was correct "Cool names!" she exclaimed "I'm Sif" I smiled at her "you've got a pretty cool name too, Sif, nice to meet you!" she smiled at me and we begun talking about nothing and everything as we petted Fenrir who was loving all the attention.
