'I'll put up the list of names tomorrow,' the coach said once the try-outs were over. The students all headed for the changing rooms, chatting to each other. Several congratulated her on her near perfect dive. She was amongst a group of three girls when she caught sight of a piece of paper on the notice board. Life guard wanted. She turned to the girls.
'I'm really sorry, I need to speak to the coach.'
'But we were going for shakes at Sam's parlour,' one of the girls, a cute redhead said.
'Sorry, maybe next time!' Skye said as she retraced her steps and walked back to the pool where the coach was still standing, looking over the scores with her assistant.
'Excuse me,' Skye said as she came up to her.
The coach, a woman in her early thirties looked up. When she saw Skye she smiled. 'Hey,' she glanced at her list, 'Skye right?'
Skye nodded. 'Great technique,' she said approvingly, 'but I still can't tell you if you are on the team before anyone else.'
'Thanks, but that's not why I'm here.' The coach raised an eyebrow and Skye continued quickly, 'I saw that you needed a life guard.'
'Yes,' the coach nodded and then looked closely at the girl before her. 'You want it?'
'Yes, that would be great.'
'Hmm, do you have life guarding experience?'
'I spent a summer as a beach life guard in California,' Skye replied.
The coach nodded. 'Ok, no one else has applied,' she pulled out a questionnaire from her folder. 'Fill this out, and I'll let you know if you get it.'
Two days later she found out that not only had she got onto the team, but she was also one of the life guards at the swimming pool. She whooped when she found out, causing a few students to turn and stare at her in the hallway. For once she didn't care. Two of her problems had been solved. Now all she had to do was make sure he didn't mess it up. That was easier said then done. She had no control over him, no one did in Heaven or Earth as far as she knew. She still cursed the first day she had met him.
It hadn't been planned, how could it have been? It had all been an accident, a simple accident. And yet...she shook her head and quickened her pace. She couldn't think about it. She had to focus on the present, on her studies, her diving and now she had a part time job too. Things were changing for the better. She could worry about him later.
She was looking forward to the end of the day, when her first shift at the pool began. She walked into the lecture hall and sat near the back near the door so she could leave quickly.
'Haven't seen you in a while pet.'
She groaned and turned her head to see the last person she wanted to see right now. The boy from her first lecture was lounging a few seats away. She looked round to see if there were any other seats but the lecturer was already walking to the font of the room. She couldn't move.
She heard a movement and turned just in time to see the boy slide into the seat next to her.
'How have you been?' he asked cordially.
She remained silent, trying to ignore him. A second later he was tapping insistently on her shoulder.
'What?!' she hissed finally.
'How are you?'
'Fine, I'm fine,' she hissed back. He sat back with a smile, watching her intent face as she tried to listen to the lecturer.
'You know,' he whispered a few minutes later, 'I could...'
'Please leave me alone, I really need to listen' she whispered back.
He shrugged and sat back.
Skye sighed, he was unbelievable. She prayed he wouldn't bother her again. Thankfully he didn't and the rest of the lecture passed without incident. As she was packing her bag, stuffing her books in as quickly as possible she felt him watching her.
'What?' she asked finally, unable to stand being the object of his stare.
He shook his head. 'I didn't say anything.'
'You're staring,' she pointed out, grabbing her pens.
'You're far too serious,' he said, 'you need to relax.'
'Some of us can't afford to relax,' she snapped.
'Chill it's just a lecture.'
'It might be just a lecture to you,' she replied, her temper rising, 'but it'll affect the rest of my life!' She pushed back the tendrils of hair wafting on her forehead, 'I'm sure you're just here to pass the time, but please, go annoy someone else!'
She threw her bagover her shoulder and practically ran out of the room.
