"Hey Mom, how have you been doing today?" My mom said as she walked inside the house and hugged Grandma.
She sat down on the sofa with her.
"Amazing. Especially after Em-"
I thought quickly before finding some glass vase and throwing it down to the floor.
My brother cringed as the sound of the glass shattering created a loud sound, loud enough to cover up what she was about to say.
"Can you repeat yourself?" Mom asked her.
"I couldn't hear you."
"I... Nevermind.. I forgot." Grandma said after a few seconds of trying to remember what she was gonna say.
I let out a sigh of relief.
For once, I can actually be thankful for her poor memory.
"So, do you have a day off today?"
Mom nodded.
"Thank goodness. I've really needed a rest, especially after working 2 shifts a day. First at work, then with the kids. Especially Emma." She shook her head with a chuckle.
Grandma laughed.
"Isn't she such a darling?"
She smiled as she got up and poured some tea on a cup.
"I suppose, but sometimes.. I'm just really concerned for her."
My mom confessed as she looked around, as if to check that nobody else was listening.
"Why so?" Grandma asked, stirring her tea with a spoon.
"Well.. She's been doing really poorly at school. I've gotten so many school calls from her.. She's gotten so hard to control especially after what happened with her father."
My father.
"Ever since we've divorced and haven't seen him since.. She's just been so different."
"The poor girl's dealt with a lot. She'll get better as time flies by. Give her some time." Grandma assured.
Mom sighed softly.
"I sure hope so."
"Emma.." Matt whispered.
"What?" I looked at him.
"Why did Dad have to leave us? I miss him."
I sighed, before placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Me too Matt. Me too. We just have to except that we probably won't ever see him again.."
The worst thing then happened.
Matt lost grip of his backpack, and it slid down the stairs, until it reached the floor with a loud boom.
Mom looked up at us.
Shit.
I pulled Matt away before we ran upstairs.
"Emma? Matt?" Mom said, before going upstairs.
I panicked as I looked around all the different rooms.
"What do we do now? What do we do now?" I muttered as I went through all the doorknobs, trying to find a room that wasn't locked.
I finally got to one that was unlocked, but before I could open it my mom pulled us towards her.
"What do you think you two are doing here?!"
She said, her arms crossed.
"Uh.. You're dreaming?" I said nervously, my mom just crossed her arms in disbelief.
"You have a lot of explaining to do." She said in a serious tone.
Great, just fucking great.
