-- narrator --

"can you believe it's halfway through october already?"

"crazy." natsu said nonchalantly, not really paying attention.

the leaves were definitely falling off the trees now. the weather was getting colder, and the grass that was once a fresh green looked dry and unwell.

he always loved nature, but in autumn everything lost their appeal.

jellal raised an eyebrow at natsu's boring answer as he leaned against the salmon-haired boy's desk. most other people were outside in the halls as it was the five-minute break inbetween periods.

"you feeling okay?" he asked.

he was painfully aware that natsu wasn't the same around this time of year. he just looked sadder and more out of it than usual. erza had told him on multiple occasions not to interfere unless natsu wanted him to.

"i'm fine. everything outside just looks depressing, that's all."

"i get what you mean. you always have been a sucker for summer and this is the exact opposite."

"well my name means summer."

jellal hummed in response. "yeah. how are you and lucy, by the way?"

natsu froze. the weird butterflies in his stomach at the mention of her reappeared.

"now is definitely not the time to be thinking about her."

"we're good friends."

"is it... anything more than that?"

"no." natsu furrows his eyebrows. "why?"

jellal sighs, running a hand through his blue hair. he honestly didn't know what the relationship between them two was.

were they more than friends? it certainly seems that way, but they both deny it with their lives. gray did mention that love was a sensitive topic to natsu though.

"spit it out."

"i heard loke talking about lucy the other day. seems he might have a bit of a crush on her."

natsu scoffed. "why would i care?"

"you know how loke can be."

a manwhore was the most suitable word natsu could think of. he's dated more girls than you can count, and nine times out of ten the relationship doesn't end smoothly. and ten times out of ten it's his fault.

"he's a whackjob." jellal stated. "but lucy doesn't know that. if he goes after her and she ends up falling for him, it'd be heartbreak hell in less than a month."

the bell rang and natsu stayed silent.

"keep an eye out for her." the older boy advised before going back to his desk.

natsu put his head in his hands and gripped his salmon-coloured hair. he felt this weird anger inside of him, a sudden hatred at just the thought of loke.

"why am i angry?"

-- lucy heartfilia --

class was boring, as usual. i'm pretty sure nobody was paying attention, mostly because we were learning about history.

i put my pen to my book and begin to scribble. it looks like i'm doing at least something, but i'm just staring at squiggly lines.

natsu is next to me. he looks distracted which is no surprise whatsoever. but this time something felt different. there was a tint of anger in those beautiful onyx eyes that i couldn't really explain.
