Chapter Two
Rediscovering life
The next couple of months fly by relatively smooth for the Smith family, although Max has realized that his new parents are seldom home. There always seems to be some emergency that draws Joe away and keeps him away, and the problem that arose on Max's first day at Anne's workplace has become a legal nightmare for her. When she is home she spends her time in the dining room behind a pile of papers and documents until the early hours of the morning, only to get up in a few hours and do it all over again. Max always eager to help out has become the cook, maid, and parent to Evan during this time of crisis only to be dealt with resentment and jealousy from the younger Smith. He tries not to complain though, Evan does enough as it is, because, despite all the flaws of his new home, it is a hundred times better than the agency. The neighborhood is small, but there are a few other kids his age, Kara, a cute girl two houses down, and Sam, another cute girl, but a little different, lives across the street from Max.
While Kara is the popular one in the neighborhood and at school, Sam seems to be the one he has made a connection with probably because she is a bit of a tom-boy, with brownish-blonde hair, thin build, but a little bit nerdy, and she doesn't have a problem with his being adopted. They have become friends in a very short period of time and when not playing together they are probably calling or texting each other. In just a few short months Max has acclimated to teenage society fairly well except for the responsible streak that was pounded into him at the agency by Mrs. Wallace, it seems to be hard for him to shake, but endearing to Sam's parents.
Max sits across from Sam at the corner fast food restaurant sipping on a chocolate shake and sharing a plate of chili-cheese fries, a quiet respite from life as Evan's big brother.
"You shouldn't kiss my mom's butt so much, it's embarrassing." Sam suggests as she scoops up a glob of cheese on her fry.
"I don't mean to, it's just instinctive. That ogre of a woman Mrs. Wallace made us do everything. I had no idea what it was to be a real teenager." Max complains.
"It's a bitch to be a teenager these days, our parents have no idea." She insists.
"Yea,"
"Hey, what time do you have to be at school to register today?" Sam asks.
"By three."
"Why don't we just go do it now, so we can go shoot some hoops at the park after?" She suggests.
"Sounds good, let's go," Max says.
"Not until I finish my fries, you know how I love my fries" Sam teases.
"Hurry, I want to get there before Douglas starts trolling the park for kids to beat up," Max insists.
Sam hurries and eats her chili-cheese fries as fast as she can, making a mess on the table and her shirt. Max has a good laugh at her antics as she walks away to the bathroom to clean herself up, when she enters the bathroom Max can feel someone's presence behind him.
"Hey Max," Kara says as she taps him on the shoulder.
"Hey Kara, what's up?" He asks.
"Why do you hang around with that lesbo?" Kara asks.
"Because she's not a stuck up, selfish bitch like you." Max sarcastically replies.
"Whatever! Continue your date with the lesbo." She exclaims walking away.
Max watches as Kara walks out of the restaurant, She is a beautiful young girl, but wicked and mean, he stares at her as Sam walks up from behind and startles him, she had noticed Max watching Kara and became a little bit jealous.
