Chapter Nine

Expendable

Anne, Sam, and Evan are taken to separate rooms where they are interrogated for hours on end without any breaks, food, or relief. None of them talk because none of them know any more than is already known by all involved anyway, but as Jen told each of them earlier "it is far worse to be expendable than needed". If they think you really don't know any more information, then you might just disappear never to be seen again. After being dragged back unconscious they all wake up in the room with Jen, Evan is crying, but defiant, Anne is angry, and Sam is just freaked out by the whole situation.

"What do they want from us?" Sam asks.

"Nothing sweetheart, they want to know everything about Max and me so they can develop a way to travel through time and destroy their enemies before they ever become a threat," Jen explains.

"Can you control your traveling?" Anne asks.

"Yes, but I haven't been able to do it in quite a while," Jen explains.

"Why?" Sam asks.

"They give me some type of injection that suppresses that gene in me; they also have done quite a few genetic tests over the years, but to date, they haven't gotten what they want. That's why they want Max, so they can experiment on a new specimen, maybe get different results or confirm the results they have. They brought in another kid about thirteen a couple of years ago, but during an event, he returned almost cut in half from having landed in the middle of one of the Scottish border wars," Jen explains.

"How rare is this mutation?" Anne asks.

"Thirteen years ago when I worked at Genetech I did a worldwide search and only found four, all of them were young in their teens. Two months later all of them had died in bad time events, some had returned underground, others in the middles of shark-infested waters, and one who was flying in a plane ended up returning on top of Mount Everest naked," Jen explains.

"So Max is in a lot of danger from more than just a secret government agency," Anne states.

"Who cares? Who cares about all the details! Max is going to return and we're not going to be there to help him!" Sam insists," What I want to know is how do we get out of here?"

"Good question, how do we get out of here?" Anne asks.

"If I knew how to do that wouldn't you think I would have left by now?" Jen explains.

Frustrated by their predicament Anne, Sam and Jen ponder on a way to escape. Speaking in low mumbled tones so that they can't be heard by the cameras and microphones. Many plans are discussed between them, but all are flawed and easily dismissed as too dangerous to attempt with a young boy like Evan.

"Evan, Where's Evan?" Sam asks standing and looking throughout the entire room.

"He was just over there crying and complaining," Anne says.

"They didn't come in for him, did they?" Jen asks.

"We would have seen," Sam declares.

BUUUUUUZZZZZZZZ! CLICK!

The huge steel door pops open and swings wide inside the room, all attention is drawn to the door as the worst is expected, one of them is missing and maybe just maybe they have come for another.

"Hey guys, I got the door open isn't that cool," Evan says.

"Evan! How'd you?" Anne asks dumbfounded.
