Chapter 9: Warning

It's been about a month since Kara stood up for me to her friends and sister. We have grown closer each day  even though I can't help but feel responsible about what happened with her sister. Before the fight they had seemed very close and I feel guilty for coming between them. Alex had tried to talk to her a few times but Kara would just avoid her angrily.

It is almost 4pm on a Wednesday and I'm sitting alone on my bed practising spells. When an owl flies in through my open bedroom window. It drops a letter in my lap and flies out without even waiting for money.

A bit startled I put down my wand and take the letter instead. I look for a name and when I don't find one, I open it and start reading.

'Lena.'

'Meet me in the astronomy tower at midnight. I have information about your mother.'

'H. Wells'

I hear a knock on the door and quickly hide the letter between the pages of one of the books laying in front of me. I use a spell to unlock the door.

"Come in. The door is unlocked."

The heavy door slowly opens and a happy blonde walks through it. A smile naturally appears on my face.

"Hey nerd! Whatcha studying?"

She chuckles and jumps on the bed laying down with her feet up and head in her hands.

"Just practising a little. What are you doing here?"

She pouts playfully.

"Are you not happy to see me? Okay then I'll just leave."

She stands up again but I reach out to grab her arm and pull her back on the bed. We both giggle as she falls flat on her face.

"Don't be silly ofcourse I'm happy to see you."

She gives me a beaming smile and grabs a book pretending to read it.

"Sooooooo... I was wondering if I could sleepover tonight?"

She looks up from the book smiling. And I almost say yes when I remember the letter I just received.

"Um... actually... tonight may not be a good time... "

"Why? Do you have plans or something?"

She pouts and I get a bit uncomfortable. Maybe I should tell her the truth... but what if when she finds out I lied to her, she won't like me anymore. I shake the thaught from my head and try to find a good excuse as to why she couldn't sleep over tonight.

"Well... no, but I... um... "

"Okay then it's settled. I'm staying here. "

She said with a victorious smile. I just look at her for a moment still trying to come up with an excuse before I give up and sigh. Kara stands up and starts jumping on my bed making my books, papers and myself bounce up in the air. I let out a surprised squeal. She just laughs and pulls me up with her holding my hands while we jump on the bed.

Hours later I am laying in my bed staring at the ceiling. I can hear soft snores coming from the sleeping beauty next to me. I look at the clock and see it is 11:30pm. As silent as possible I slip out of bed and put on some clothes trying not to wake up Kara. When I open the door though a small squeak is heard.

During the time we have been spending together I had learned that among other things, Kara has an excellent hearing. So ofcourse, she wakes up when hearing the door. I can see her sleepily reach for me on the bed and she sits up rubbing her eyes when she can't find me.
