~ Cat ))Sams POV
Sam sighed as he hurried along the snow covered sidewalk, his sneakers squealing against the dry snow. He glanced at his phone again, rereading the text from his study partner, Katie.
'Sammy. Meet me @ the penn statr 4 project help.' Sam sighed and hit the power off button as the harsh Pennsylvania wind tugged at his hair and scarf. Cars sped past on the busy street, causing grey brown slush to soak the first years shoes and jeans. A loud creaking causes him to look up. A rickety old sign was hanging in front of a small building, crammed in between two larger ones. On the sign, written in faded navy blue lettering, The Penn Stater was carved. Below it, a mountain lion stood on a large rock, fangs showing."This must be the place..." Sam muttered, pushing the door open. The tiny bell at the corner of the door rang loudly, causing heads to look up all over the cafe. Tables and chairs were everywhere, making the cafe seem like organized chaos. The light tan of the walls made it seem welcoming, like coming home after a long day of work or something. There were no over head lights, just the occasional candle and lamp. There was one barista, who was busy wiping off the counter. He had golden brown hair lazily flipped over to one side of his face. Sam noticed a steel spiral staircase towards the back off the small shop. He trudged over, backpack slung over his shoudler. He winced as he began up the steps, each foot step sending a thundering boom throughout the queit murmurings. When he reached the second level, it was nothing but rows and rows of books. Ranging from horror to non fiction. He glanced around, until a girl caught his eye. She was wearing a short peach colored dress with little cats all over it. On her right arm, a few tattoos were scattered here and there. A cat skull on her forearm, and an a sunset over the ocean streaching from her shoulder to her elbow. Her short hair was dyed light purple, bleached roots showing through. It was almost shorter than most guys he knew, which wasn't very many. She was broswing through the horror section, a look of utter consentration on her face. She pulled out an old book, and blew the dust off it. He could read H.P Lovecraft in faded lettering along the spine.
"Katie?" He almost whispered, careful not to be shushed. Her head snapped up, looking around for the person who said her name. Her eyes fell on Sam, and a happy expression crossed her face
"Sammy!" She squealed, running over, her black converse thudding on the ground. She hugged him tight, her head almost reaching his chest. "How are you! I haven't seen you since..." She paused, counting on her fingers, murmuring numbers under her breath. "At least 6 months! You've gotten so tall!" Sam blushed, running his hand through his hair.
"I could say the same about you, Ms. Hess." He laughed. "Come on. You promised you'd help me with a project." Sam said, starting back down the stairs. Katie followed, her H.P Lovecraft book clutched to her chest.
"See that bag? Got set your stuff over there. I'll go get us some coffee." She said, pointing to a canvas bag with a couple of strange symbols on them. Must be an artist thing.. Sam sighed, leaving Katies side to go sit down. Her spot was next to a large window in the front. From what Sam remebered about Katie, she was the type of person to say 'Its a glass filled with water you can quit aurging now.' He laughed and pluged his laptop charger into a wall outlet, opening up his research paper on the Salem Witch trials. Sam was planning on being a middle school teacher. He needed to write al long essay all about early American history as his first assignment. Katie sat at the table, pushing a large cup towards him.
"Drink up. I made sure I got the thing with the most caffine possible." She laughed, taking a sip of her drink.
"Thanks." Sam chuckled, taking a log sip of the coffee. It was most perfect cup of coffee he had ever tasted. He took the cup away fron his lips, wiping his mouth with a napkin. "Katie this is amazing! Who made this?" He asked, looking at the scrawled letters on his cup, spelling out Sammy. Soft music played through the cafe, some people queitly singing.
"Gabriel makes the best coffee out of all the baristas here." She paused thoughtfully, taking a long sip. "He's pretty good at making a chai tea latte." She said quietly, pulling a large sketch pad out off her bag.
"Really? I thought you were going to help me." Sam said, shooting Katie the infamous Winchester bitchface. Katie laughed, digging through her bag to find a pencil.
"I'll listen and I can help you improve what you have." She huffed, pulling out a yellow Tincondaroga, sharping it, then pushing the shavings onto the ground.
"Fine." Sam began to read, with Katie interjecting something like "You paused. Did you have a period there? Or a coma?" "...No." "Then add one." She kept tapping her pencil on the large pad, taking a sip of her tea every so often. After Sam finished reading Katie began to clap.
"Good job young one." She said in a mock low voice, furrowing her eyebrows together.
"Katie I'm older than you." Sam laughed getting up to throw his cup away. The guy was now making some other drink for a tall man, probably the same age as Sam. He had black hair that was slicked back, and piercing blue eyes. The barista turned, handing the guy his drink. The nodded, and walked out of the cafe.
"Hey.." Sam said queitley, running his hands through his hair. The barista turned, eyeing Sam up and down.
"Well, hey there Gigantor." He said cooly, placing one hand on the counter, leaning all his weight on it.
"You made my drink, right?"
"And you would be..."
"You wrote Sammy on my cup."
"Oh! Yeah that's me. Your with that cutie?" The barista laughed, poiting at Katie, who was bending down to pick up her bag and her book.
"Yeah, meet her a long time ago.." Sam said quietly. The barista nodded thoughtfully."That coffee was really good. Thanks." Sam added, turning towards Katie. Katie smiled and headed towards the barista, setting her book on the counter. The barista leaned back and winked at Katie. Sam heard a fragment of what he said to her.
"Keep it. It's on the house. And, give this to that Sammy friend of yours." He whispered, scrawling something on a piece of paper. Katie smiled and nodded, walking back to Sam who was leaning agaisnt the wall.
"Ready?" He asked, smiling as hse pulled on her coat, scarf and hat.
"Yup!" She smiled, handing Sam the piece of paper the barista gave her.
"Whats this?" He asked, pulling open the balled up wad of paper. A string of numbers were unevenly scribbled across the paper. At the end, a small heart with a halo and wings. Sam began to blush.
"In case you didn't know, Gabriel swings both ways. You did too if I can rember corectly..." She muttered, sending a devilish grin at Sam.
"Shut up! It was 20 bucks, ok?" He laughed, pushing the door open, a blast of cold air hitting the two people. They steped out into the cool air, turing right down the sidewalk, they weaved in and out of crowds of people heading to their next class.
"Soo, Sam. Are you gonna call Gabriel later?" Katie asked, breaking the silence. She nudged Sam hard in the ribs, pulling on the end of his scarf .
"What? Gabe? Yeah.. Sure." Sam blushed, turning away from her, so she couldn't see his face.
"Good. Because I ship it so hard. I need a name." She smiled, a far off look in her eyes. "How about... Sabriel!" She said, bringing her hands together in a loud clapping noise. Sam turned towards his dorm.
"So this is goodbye?" Sam asked, letting small snowflakes gather in his hair. Katie smiled
"No. Of course not Winchester." Katie said, leaning on her tip toes to kiss his cheek.
"Bye then!" She turned on her heels, almost skipping in the other direction, scarf flowing out behind her. Sam reached up, feeling the heat rushing to his cheek. He sighed, walking up the sidewalk to the dorm rooms.
