Gally continued to blame you for everything that had happened, but you weren't listening. The questoins flooded through your mind as your eyes drifted to Newt, who was casually leaning against a post supporting the roof. His body language was relaxed, but his eyes were intense, watching the expressions of Gally as he he continued his rant.
"Oh shuck off you bloody shank!" He says finally. Hearing this startled Gally, and he fell silent. "This is no ones fault except the bloody bastards that put us here. We all know that, and we can't blame anyone else. We shouldn't take any rash actions. The runners and I will discuss how to deal with the changing of the maze, and decide what's best. In the mean time everyone needs be prepared for anything that might happen." Newt finished with a sigh.
"Alright, clear out you shanks! This meeting's over." Minho calls out. With this, everyone vacates the room. You watch as Thomas follows the runners out, to study their maps of the maze. As his eyes meet yours, he gives you an apologetic look. You drop your eyes to the ground and continue on our way to the door. Before you can leave, Newt stops you by lightly holding your arm. You turn to face him nervously.
"Did you draw these?" he gestures towards the pictures on the floor, that you had drawn earlier. You realize that he must have been standing on them during the meeting in an attempt to hide them..but why?
"Ummm well yeah I guess, but they're just random lines..I'm sure they don't mean anything." You say, avoiding his eyes.
"These are the same things Thomas and Teresa saw in their dreams." He says, looking you right in the eye.
"Wh-what..?" You stutter, meeting his intense eyes with your own.
"Where have you seen these? Were you talking to Thomas? Do you know what they mean?" He pressures you with his questions, as he strongly grabs you by the arms. His actions falter when he realizes he's hurting you."Sorry." he says.
"Its okay." You try to steady yourself when you realize your voice is shaking. Newt gently releases your arms, and slowly takes a step back. Your eyes drift to the ground as you take a shaky breath. "I see those things in my dreams sometimes.. but I feel like I've seen them in person, and I should just know what they mean already. I wish I could remember."
"I can't blame your for not remembering. It's the bloody creators. " He says. You glace up to see his eyes on you, his fierce stare sending chills through your body.
"Yeah..I just can't stand it; the not knowing, and just the feeling of such an empty past before this place. It's driving me crazy."
"You should talk to some of the other keepers about that stuff, maybe we could even call a gathering. Then you could maybe answer some more questions--"
" Um I have some questions for you actually.." you venture hesitantly. "What was Gally talking about? You know, me talking and..screaming in my sleep."
Newt's eyes dropped to the ground nervously. "Yeah.....Well, it just kinda keeps happening, I mean you've only been here a week.. The first time it happened it scared the klunk out of us. We thought you were being bloody attacked by a greiver or even Gally..we all know he has an eye for ya." He hesitated and cleared his throat sheepishly "Uh Alby got there first, he saw ya there, just tossing and turning in the bed. When he tried calming you down or waking you up, you bloody kicked the shank in the stomach."
"I did?" How am I even strong enough to do that? You snickered at the thought of it.
"Yeah well, I was the next person there..and I was able to calm you down enough for you to go back to a quiet sleep, and I've just kinda been on 'guard'...if that's what you wanna call it, to calm you down every night. Sometimes Thomas helps out too, we take it in shifts. I guess it never occurred to us to actually tell you." He finishes, nervously rubbing the back of his neck.
"And I never wake up?" you question.
"No, it's bloody crazy. It's like you're going through the changing without being stung..but I guess you don't remember what makes you scream like that."
You let this sink in..part of you can recall the horrible nightmares you've been happening, but only that they had been horrible. You could never put your finger on what caused them to be that way though. Newt clears his throat again before you can say anything. "Well, I don't know if I should say 'sweet dreams', but uh its late, so I'm gonna try to get a few hours of sleep before I'm on nightmare duty." He says with a smirk before walking out of the room. You blush, embarrassed by his words, but mutter a quick goodnight and follow him out the door and walk back to the homestead where your room is.
