Over the past few weeks, you and Newt have been trying to figure out what's been going on in the maze...with little luck. Today, you and Thomas were the ones stuck with the job of putting away the maps. There were several piles scattered around the room from the recent hours of studying.
You were making somewhat of an effort to get the job done quickly, but Thomas wasn't helping very much; he was off in the corner making paper airplanes out of spare paper.
"Thomas come on! We only have one more pile to sort through." You say, becoming frustrated."Just put down the plane, come over here, and help me." Thomas gives you an annoyed look but doesn't argue, and come over to help you.
"I don't see why I got stuck doing this." He mumbles.
"Well Minho said none of the runners can go out in the maze until we know you can't get stuck in a closing section. Right?"
"Yeah. But I think that would still be better than sorting through maps."
"What did Minho mean when he said that? The whole getting stuck in the maze thing?" You ask, out of curiosity.
"The maze sections move and close and stuff, but its usually at night. Now, we don't know if they're movie at night or during the day, or even both. So basically if we go out during the day, and the maze is moving, we could get trapped in a closed off section and never come back." Thomas explains.
"And you think that's better than stacking a few papers?" You laugh.
"Being out there is always better than being in the Glade." He says simply.
"How do you figure that?" You scoff.
"Well, out there, I don't feel so trapped. I mean, yes there's walls out there and stuff, but I can just keep running. In here, we're surrounded." He explains.
"Well we're not gonna be in here forever."
"I hope so. We haven't even been here very long, and I don't know about you, but I'm definitely ready to leave." You laugh at his remark, agreeing. The two of you finish putting the rest of the maps away in silence.
"Finally!" Says Thomas.
"Oh shut it. It didn't take very long; It's only 11:30." You say glancing at his watch.
"Time for food." Thomas remarks, making his way for the door. At the thought of food your stomach growls, and you quickly follow Thomas. The eating area was crowded, but you and Thomas spot Newt at a corner table with Chuck and go to join him.
"Hey guys. Have fun in the map room?" Newt casually asks.
"Oh totally. Thomas was a big help." You say, as you sit down next to Newt, across from Chuck and Thomas.
"Hey! I was, I mean what if I was building a paper airplane that could fly us outta this shuck place??" He said defensively.
"And were you?" Newt laughs.
"Pfft I'm working on it." mumbles Thomas.
After lunch the three of you return to your Glade activities. You somehow end up in the gardens pulling weeds. Fuuunn. Well it wasn't all bad; you did have Newt to talk to, and he was a lot more productive than Thomas. When you're done in the garden, you don't have much of an appetite. You decide to skip dinner and take a walk around the Glade to clear your head.
Following the path through the dead heads, you begin to compose your thoughts..which has become increasingly difficult lately. You figure it's because of the memory loss you undertook before arriving here. It's like your memories are just behind a curtain, but you can't seem to pull the curtain away. "Shuck creators." You mumble to yourself. You sigh in frustration as you continue your walk. The trail through the dead heads is a narrow one, just barely there..not that you need a trail, you'll hit the maze wall eventually. It's peaceful in the woods, it would even be pretty if the shadow of the maze wall wasn't looming over your head. There's no wild animals, so the only noises are those coming from your own steps..until you hear something behind you. You let out a frustrated sigh when you turn to see Gally behind you. "What do you want Gally?"
"Should you really be allowed to walk around the Glade by yourself?" He asks, leaning back on a tree.
"I can take of myself." You retort quickly.
"Maybe. But you theres not just stuff outside the Glade to watch out for; theres plenty of stuff inside too..¨ He says smirking. All you can do is roll your eyes and pray that your not giving him too many emotions to read.
"Just leave me alone." You turn and start walking away, but you had underestimated how fast Gally would catch up. Suddenly a rough hand stop you by the shoulder and pins against a tree. "Gal-!" His hand covers your mouth and nearly your nose, making it harder to breath.
"You not even supposed to be here you know." He growls in your ear, as the pressure holding you against the tree increases making your eyes water in pain. "First Thomas, now you. Not to mention the fact that you're a girl." Gally says with a sick smirk.
"Hey! Get off her you shank!" Your so relieved to hear that voice that you could cry. Newt and Thomas turn the corner and don't waste any time getting Gally away from you. Thomas grips Gally's shirt and roughly pulls him off you. As his hand leaves your face, you quickly gasp for air making you fall into a fit of coughs. Gally rushes off before too much damage can be done, and Newt rushes over to you. "Are you okay? I swear to god we'll kill the bloody shank if he did anything to you."
"Yeah yeah..I'm okay." You mutter, standing up. Newt goes to help you, but you brush him off. This didn't change anything, you could still take care of yourself.
You don't realize how late it actually is until you hear the creaking of the maze doors closing. When you get back to your room, you don't even think about changing your clothes or even pulling back the blanket. You're exhausted from the frustration, anger, and just everything in between. You collapse on the bed and will yourself to fall into sleep.
The first thing you remember when your dreams begin is the screaming. But it's different this time; you can here yourself, feel someone trying to wake you up, saying "it's okay." Part of you wants to wake up; to escape, but you will yourself to concentrate on the dream. You can feel the pain, but it's all you can register. The rest is darkness...and a voice.
"This will be over soon. And remember, WICKED is good." The pain is over, and the memories and images begin flashing through your mind. The pieces of the code, flashes of faceless people, and her. The girl.
*Morning*
You wake with a start, feeling fear until you realize your in your room. You relax your head on the pillow and try to collect you thoughts, as you take deep breaths. Without sitting up, you glance at the window across from you to see the last few rays of the sunrise. When you adjust to turn over, you realize how tired you body is, the nightmares are exhausting you. With a slight wince you move to turn over, but freeze when your arm brushes something..or someone. Slightly frightened, you slowly sit up attempting not to send any movements through the bed. What you see makes you relax. Strung across the other side of the bed is a passed out Newt. He hadn't bothered to use the blanket, but you notice he must've pulled it over you. You smile when you look at him. He's breathing slowly and calmly. He looks peaceful..almost happy; it makes you wonder if he's dreaming. His hair is tousled and messy, it causes you to giggle quietly to yourself. He stirs slightly turning his head at the sound. Even with his hair a mess, he does look kind of adorable..
