Newt doesn't look up when you come in. You slowly step behind him and clear your throat, making him jump in surprise. "Oh hey, it's you." he says sighing in relief.
"Uh yeah. Were you expecting someone else?" You ask quietly.
"No, no, I just wasn't expecting you, but I could actually use your help." he says pulling out the chair next to him for you to sit down. You timidly step forward and take a seat next to him. You trusted Newt more than any other the other Gladers (other than Thomas), but you still weren't sure how comfortable you felt around him. As you sit down you look at the maps in front of him. They all appear to be a rather random selection.
"Okay, what do you need me for?" You ask a little surprised.
"Well these are all the maze sections that have disappeared, and I figured there must be some kind of reason or message that the shuck creators are trying to tell us. , and maybe figuring it out would help you remember what you see in your dreams. I would ask Thomas, but his dreams stopped after Teresas....well yeah." Teresa was a touchy subject for everyone. It wasn't hard to
see, but you had laid off asking anything about her.
"Do you think the maze is shrinking to show us a way out or trap us?" You ask. "I mean those are really the only two options, right?" You step next to Newt to look at the maps he has out.
"Yeah..I guess so. But I don't see why it would be revealing a way out now after 3 years. I wish they would just send us a bloody instruction manual." Newt says looking down at the maps.
You nod your head understandingly. "Yeah, but I think that's beside the point. It's not a matter of when or even if we get out of here. It's a matter of how. Which means they, whoever they are, can't give us the answers."
"What if the answer to getting out of here isn't even real though. I mean we've been searching the maze for 3 years. Shouldn't we have found the bloody exit by now??" Newt answers, becoming frustrated.
"I don't we have any choice except to keep looking. I mean, We can't just give up. Even if you already have." You say. Newt looks up at you, with saddened eyes. You realize that the comment may have hurt him. "I'm sorry." You say quietly.
"No. You're right. We don't have very many other options; we just have to keep looking, and figure this out." He says.
The two of you continue to study the maps, speaking occasionally as you dig out more and more paper maps from the dusty trunks.
"Do you think I could go into the maze?" You ask quietly. "I mean-"
"No." Newt interrupts. "That wouldn't be a good idea.." He says.
"But why not? I can take care of myself you know. And I'm sure someone could take me." You quickly argue.
"It's not a matter of taking care of yourself..I just think it's a bad idea." Newt retorts calmly.
"But why?! The runners do. Just make me a runner for a day or something." Newt laughs at this.
"Runner for a day?? That's not how it works ya know." He chuckles.
"I don't care.." You mumble.
"Why are you so bloody stubborn?"
"Pffft. I don't know what you're talking about." You say. The two of you continue to sort through the maps. "So what are we looking for?"
"Just patterns, in how the maze changed before and after the sections started closing off. It doesn't look like we're gonna find much though."
"Well don't you think the runners would be better at this then? I mean they know the maze better."
"I know the maze better than anyone else who isn't a bloody runner themselves." He says. "But I hate the place; I don't belong in there." He finishes. You get the sense he doesn't want to talk about it, and you let the subject die down.
You and Newt spend the few remaining hours of the morning going over the maps. After what feels like only moments you here the clouded sound of a bell coming from out in the Glade. Newt hears it too, and stands as he begins gathers the scattered maps on the table.
"That must be the lunch bell." He says. "I think we've discussed this enough for today. After all I can't hide in here though the whole bloody day." He laughs. "There are probably other things to attend to unless Alby's handled them." You hear him take a deep breath as you stand up as well, and push in your chair.
"I think I might go see if anyone's in the showers..they might actually be abandoned; which would give me a chance to clean up." You say as you follow Newt to the door.
"Showering in the middle of the day?" He says laughing. When you're both outside the door, you turn to face him.
"Well yes. It's not as if I can shower in the morning with the rest of you shanks!" you say, now giggling as well.
As you make your way to the showers, you get caught up in your thoughts. As they start to trace back to your conversations with Newt, you start to realize how great he really is, and maybe you can really trust him.
Thank you for reading! Do you guys want a chapter from someone like Newt or Thomas' point of view? If you do, comment! ;)
