Memory of a Dear Place by kennedykelis

(YA romance short story, available on Wattpad)

Overall Rating : 9.5/10

Summary:

August is in love with Carolina, an upbeat, optimistic, charismatic girl with brain cancer. August tells his story of the battle he experiences between his admiration of/love for Carolina's character and the grim reality of her sickness and the possibility of her dying at any moment.

Review:

(1) Characters - 9.5/10

The protagonist (Augustine) and the main character (Carolina) are super compelling (and very ship-able ;)). Carolina, although she suffers from terminal cancer, lives her life to the fullest, lighting up everyone around her and not letting her sickness prevent her from being in a relationship or make goals or do anything she wants to do. She is a phenomenal role model for those who may be in her shoes and for those who aren't, especially August. August himself is dynamic, complex, and, well, human. Readers are bound to relate to August and look up to Carolina, and that's what really elevates Kelis's story.

(2) Plot - 9/10

The story revolves mostly around who Carolina is as well as her effect on August's life and the lives of those around her. There are fluffy moments coupled with the overshadowing threat of tragedy, which work together to emulate a theme that is truly heartwarming and relevant. This story is more speculative and thoughtful than entertaining, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

There are some minor grammatical/spelling mistakes, but nothing that'll cause confusion or lack of clarity. There are also minor instances of inconsistent narrative voice that kind of jar the reader out of the story for a bit, but it doesn't take away from the story as a whole.

In summary, Kelis does a near-flawless job telling August's and Carolina's story. It's moving, it's page-turning, and it's inspiring; Memory of a Dear Place is guaranteed to warm and break your heart at the same time. If you're a fan of fluffy romance, The Fault in our Stars, and/or heartwarming themes, then this short story is for you!
