mariah kept one thought in mind, she did not want to see the one and only, chase elliott.
she hated lying to him and if she saw his adorable face, she knew she was going to break and that was the last thing she needed.
as she pulled into the school parking lot, she saw some of her fellow seniors stand around in their groups, excited for graduation.
she parked her car and hunched to grab her backpack and lanyard
but as she grabbed her lanyard, she noticed the little keychain with chase's name on it. they had given each other a keychain that had their names on it so they would always remember each other,
it sure did the job.
she felt another pang of guilt hit her as she looked around and saw a familiar backpack and shaggy hair.
thankfully, he was turned away from her.
mariah, sucked a breath in as she slipped past the group he was in, in hopes that he wouldn't see her.
she then let the breath go when she entered the school and walked into the office to grab her cap and gown
she grabbed the ones with her name on them and shoved them\ in her backpack, putting on a smile as she began walking to her first period class
"mariah, is that you?" a voice boomed from behind her.
she felt her heart drop as she stopped dead in her tracks, closing her eyes
she gulped knowing damn well whose voice that belonged to.
"yup, that's me" she stated, opening her eyes and turning to face her current nightmare.
chase's heart doing flips in his chest, oblivious to what she was feeling.
he loved seeing her face, she took his breath away every time, he couldn't bear being away from her for more than a week
she was his safe haven.

the small conversation that chase has created gave mariah a great reason to not tell him about her problems.
she kept reminding herself of what his face would be if she told him.
she looked to her right to see chase's beautiful face light up as he continued to talk about how excited he was about today.
"you know, lukas is having a party on saturday" chase spoke with a mischievous smile on his face.
mariah mentally cringed, those parties were dangerous for anyone involved, and not to mention, saturday was the day mariah moved away for good.
"really now?" she turned back to face chase, going along with the conversation
mariah wanted so badly to tell chase of her situation but in the end, she decided that maybe her parents were right, not telling him was her best option.
she didn't want her secret to hurt chase and cause him pain when he was absolutely elated with the way his life was going right now.
"i was thinking, do you want to hang out tomorrow, ya know, no more school and i'm not doing anything." Chase smiled at mariah, bringing her out of her thoughts.
"yeah, of course" she quickly returned the smile taking a sip of her water
"alright. your house?" chase questioned
mariah choked on her water causing chase to widen his eyes
"i uhh" she stumbled over her words. she knew that chase could not go to her house and see nothing but moving boxes
"my parents are working late and uh ya know, so i was hoping your house?" she lied
it then occurred to mariah. she has never been on the inside of the elliott estate. she has seen the outside from them just hanging out occasionally and it was beautiful but never in the 18 years of mariahs life has she seen the inside of chase elliott's house.
mariah's eyes focused on his face as she noticed his eyes widen in fear.
he cleared his throat and scratched the back of his neck, "my house is being remodeled so we can't" chase nervously let out, in hopes that she won't push the subject anymore.
"you know, the carnival is finally open. Do you wanna go there instead?" chase quickly let out changing the subject.
"yeah sure, what time do you wanna meet up at?" mariah shrugged, content of the idea
"i was hoping I could pick you up?" chase asked innocently
"oh, okay! just tell me what time" mariah winked at him before entering her classroom

graduation is the day where you look back and reminisce all your memories of high school
but things were different for mariah as she could not push the dark cloud of guilt from her mind
but she continued to tell herself that the lying will soon be done and she won't have to think about school, dawsonville, and even chase
as much as mariah wanted to get away from her dark secret, chase was wishing she would forever stay with him. he wanted to call her his, again oblivious to all her problems
he promised himself that when she was his, he would tell her all his secrets, he would take to her to all his races, put her in his pit box, and the whole nine yards
but he wanted to wait, he didn't want to overwhelm her with his proposal to be his and graduation week.
mariah took a seat in her assigned place, not too far from elliott.
she gathered her thoughts as she patiently waited to be called up, glancing at chase one in a while.
chase came before mariah so the anticipation didn't last long for him
mariah watched as he walked across the stage with a large smile on his face the entire time
as he came down, he locked eyes with her sending shivers down her spine
mariah knew that when she moves away she was going to miss going out on late night adventures with him, seeing his soft smile, messing with his shaggy hair, and getting nice long hugs, inhaling his musky scent.
but she also knew that it was for the better.
